Southdale goes for a title in Autumn Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Southdale will stake his claim for the Sovereign Award as this year’s Canadian champion older male Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack in the $150,000 Autumn Stakes.

Southdale notched a pair of Grade 3 stakes victories here this year, the Durham Cup and the Eclipse, which was contested at the 1 1/16-mile distance of the Autumn. Last time, in the slow-paced Durham Cup, he rallied inside from mid-pack to win the 1 1/8-mile race going away.

Hot Fusion puts unbeaten streak on line while switching to turf

PHOENIX – Hot Fusion brings a 5-for-5 record into Saturday’s $25,000 Jack Coady Sr. Stakes at Turf Paradise, but he will be racing on grass for the first time and in new surroundings.

The Coady, a mile race for 3-year-olds, drew nine runners.

Sacco has plenty of Jersey Juvenile talent

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Trainer Greg Sacco will be looking for a stakes sweep on Saturday at Monmouth Park in the $70,000 colt and filly divisions of the Jersey Juvenile for 2-year-olds.

With the Monmouth season soon coming to an end, this is the last major event of the year for New Jersey-breds.

When handicapping the two divisions, you have to circle Sacco’s three runners as live contenders in the six-furlong races

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Graham Motion has nominated plenty of horses to stakes races here at Woodbine Racetrack this year but has had only one entrant, as Gypsy’s Warning finished fifth in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly on July 18.

On Saturday, Motion hopes to be on hand when Smart Bid becomes his second starter of the meeting in the $150,000 Autumn for 3-year-olds and upward.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Isabella Bay ran down Dreamy Moonlite in the final strides to take the $126,200 South Ocean Stakes on Wednesday night at Woodbine Racetrack.

Isabella Bay got away slowly under Chantal Sutherland, and was rated near the back of the pack, while Zee Beauty set a fast pace in the 1 1/16-mile test for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies.

Zenyatta taking it easy back at Hollywood Park

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Zenyatta took one look at the attractive pink-and-white floral arrangement delivered to her Wednesday at Hollywood Park before deciding what to do – she reached out and took a big bite.

“Wait a minute,” trainer John Shirreffs said. “Don’t let her eat it, until I get a picture of it.”

Racing’s queen has returned home, and Zenyatta remains the same playful ham she was even before she captivated the sport with a gallant runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The New Jersey Racing Commission on Wednesday approved 141 live Thoroughbred racing dates for 2011, in a decision that allows racing interests to comply with state law while seeking changes to statutes that enforce minimum live-racing dates.

Lookin At Lucky's future up in the air

If Lookin At Lucky is not retired, he could run in the Dec. 26 Malibu at Santa Anita.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Lookin At Lucky has returned to Hollywood Park, where trainer Bob Baffert and the colt’s owners soon will decide the 3-year-old colt’s future after his fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Baffert was asked Wednesday if Lookin At Lucky will have a 4-year-old campaign.

“Right now, I’d say yes,” he said.

Baffert left room to wiggle.

“There have been serious inquiries concerning his stallion career,” Baffert said. “We’ll see how he comes back; our other option is the Malibu.”

Aqueduct pick six carryover hits $168K

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – No one hit the pick six for the third straight racing day at Aqueduct on Wednesday, resulting in a $168,769 carryover into Thursday’s card.

Favorites were blanked in Wednesday’s sequence of To the Point ($9.90), Premium Wine ($7.90), Ambidaxtrous ($10.40), Six Flings ($34.40), Abilio ($8.60), and First Day ($25.40).

The 5-of-6 consolation paid $8,912.

The pick six on Thursday comprises races 4-9.
