Kentucky Derby: To Honor and Serve sidelined with suspensory injury

To Honor and Serve will miss miss training time due to an injury and is off the Kentucky Derby trail.

To Honor and Serve, third in both the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby, is off the Kentucky Derby trail with a strain to the suspensory ligament of his left foreleg, trainer Bill Mott said late Friday afternoon.

Mott said the injury is “very common” and that To Honor and Serve would probably lose four to six weeks of training, but could ultimately make it back to the races later this year at a high level.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A veterinarian once hired to evaluate the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's herd of about 1,200 horses says the retirement group must reduce its herd if it is to continue its mission of retiring former racehorses.

Indiana Downs owner files for bankruptcy

The parent company of Indiana Downs in Shelbyville, Ind., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware on Thursday, joining the parent company of Indiana’s other racetrack-casino, Hoosier Downs, in bankruptcy court.

In a release, the company, Indianapolis Downs LLC, said the track and its casino would remain open while the company reorganizes. The company claimed that it was generating enough cash flow to pay its operating expenses, but would seek to restructure its $500 million debt.

Pletcher gets reality check amid Derby buildup

Churchill Downs and NBC Sports announced Wednesday that they once again will offer a $100,000 win bet on the Kentucky Derby to one fan, a marketing experiment that paid off wildly in its first try last year when a Houston man hit for $900,000 by placing his wager on Super Saver, the Derby winner at 8-1.
