Mace Siegel, owner and California track fixture, dead at 86

Mace Siegel, the shopping mall owner who operated a successful Thoroughbred stable with his family, died at his Beverly Hills home of heart failure on Wednesday, according to a friend of the family.

Siegel was 86. He had recently returned home after a monthlong hospitalization.

Illinois governor begins selecting racing board members

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn began the process of appointing five new commissioners to the Illinois Racing Board this week.

Benjamin Reyes, William Berry, Kathy Byrne, Patricia Beauvais, and Roger Whalen, will become new members of the racing board after the gubernatorial appointment process is completed. Byrne, an owner, and Beauvais, a breeder, are the only two likely appointees who have experience in the horse industry.

Ellis Park applies for gaming machines

LEXINGTON, Ky., – Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., has asked the state to authorize its plans to install 250 gambling devices that use the results of previously run races to determine payouts.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is scheduled to vote on the application at a meeting on Monday. The application is expected to be approved.
