Stronach Group, Jockeys' Guild reach payment agreement

The Stronach Group, which owns six racetracks, has renewed an agreement with the Jockeys’ Guild that will provide payments to the organization for the next three years, providing what could become a critical source of ongoing funding for the guild’s health-insurance plans.

Los Alamitos: Champion found to have clenbuterol overage

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – Freaky, the 2009 Quarter Horse World Champion, tested in excess of the permitted level of clenbuterol taken after his win in the Go Man Go Handicap at Los Alamitos on Sept. 11, according to a California Horse Racing Board complaint released over the weekend.

Belmont, Finger Lakes among five tracks to cancel due to bad weather

The major storm that brought snow and heavy rain to much of the East Coast on Saturday cut short two live racing programs and caused the cancellation of the entire cards at three other tracks.

Belmont Park in New York called off racing after just three races were run over a sloppy track. The New York Racing Association will offer free clubhouse and grandstand admission on Sunday, the final day of the Belmont fall meet.

The Grade 3, $100,000 Bold Ruler Handicap, originally scheduled as the ninth race on Saturday’s card, was rescheduled for Sunday, Nov.  6 at Aqueduct.

Joe Negri Jr., Northern California owner, dies at 78

Joe Negri Jr., 78, who owned and raced horses in Northern California for more than 50 years, died last Saturday in Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital of kidney failure, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Negri bought his first racehorse when he was in his 20’s. Negri also bred horses.

Louisiana HBPA sentencing postponed

Mona Romero, the former executive director of the Louisiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association who was to have been sentenced Thursday for her role in an election-rigging case, has a new sentencing date of Jan. 19, 2012, according to the offices of U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

Romero in July pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, and identity fraud, while one of her associates, Sean Alfortish, former president of the Louisiana horsemen’s asociation, pleaded guilty in the same case in August and is to be sentenced Dec. 15.
