Monmouth Park extending meet

Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., will extend its meet by two weekends, starting with cards this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, according to an announcement from the track made on late Wednesday afternoon.

First post for the six additional race cards will be 12:15 p.m. Eastern each day, according to the announcement, and general admission and parking will be free. Monmouth will also offer racing Nov. 18-20.

Campbell reducing role with Dogwood Stables

Cot Campbell, the longtime president of Dogwood Stables and a pioneer in racing syndicates, said Wednesday that he no longer will form new partnerships and is decreasing his involvement in the sport.

Campbell, 84, said from the stable’s Aiken, S.C., headquarters that the Dogwood legacy “probably will continue in another form,” possibly with longtime officials Bill Victor and Jack Sadler running it.

Beshear reelected as Kentucky governor

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear, a Democrat who has supported the efforts of state racing interests to obtain authorization for casino gambling, easily won reelection as Kentucky’s governor on Tuesday, beating a Republican challenger who has insisted that any expansion of gambling be approved by voters.

Breeders' Cup television ratings drop along with handle

Despite the addition of a 15th race this year, total commingled handle on the Breeders’ Cup declined by 5.1 percent this year compared with last year’s record total, with several factors, most prominently the absence of a superstar like Zenyatta, contributing to the drop.

Breeders' Cup: Velazquez wins Shoemaker Award as event's top jockey

John Velazquez won two races on Friday's Breeders' Cup card, including Stephanie's Kitten in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Breeders’ Cup Ltd. announced Sunday that John Velazquez has been named the winner of the Bill Shoemaker Award for being the most outstanding jockey at the 2011 Breeders’ Cup. This is the second time that Velazquez, 39, has won the Shoemaker Award, having previously won it at Lone Star Park in 2004.

Jockeys' Guild still seeks payment from Churchill Downs Inc.

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom to begin galloping Monday

Animal Kingdom came out of the Belmont Stakes with a leg injury that required surgery.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Graham Motion said "it seems like ages ago" that he won the Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom. Actually, it's only been six months.

Motion, back in Louisville to participate in this weekend's Breeders' Cup, said Thursday that Animal Kingdom and Wood Memorial winner Toby's Corner will both begin galloping Monday at the Fair Hill training center in Maryland.

Racing Form's Hersh, Grening honored

Marcus Hersh and David Grening, reporters for Daily Racing Form, were honored Wednesday night at the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Association dinner at the Louisville Slugger museum in downtown Louisville, Ky.

Hersh was named winner of the Breeders' Cup's Joe Hirsch Award for newspaper writing for a profile of trainer Al Stall Jr. in the time leading up to last year's Breeders' Cup event. The article appeared a week before Stall saddled Blame for a victory in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic.

Jockeys' Guild, NYRA renew payment agreement

The Jockeys’ Guild and the New York Racing Association have renewed a three-year agreement that provides payments to the guild from NYRA’s three tracks, the two organizations said on Thursday.

Under the agreement, NYRA will provide payments to the guild for each live mount at the association’s three racetracks through the end of 2014. The current agreement expires at the end of 2011.
