Big Blue Kitten wins the United Nations at Monmouth on July 5. The Bowling Green and Sword Dancer, both at Saratoga, are on his schedule in August.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Golden Horn will begin his quest to become the first same-year winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Cup Turf from post 1, a draw that’s not ideal but which Golden Horn ought to be able to overcome if his superiority shines through Saturday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Just about anything that could go wrong has gone wrong in trainer Guadalupe Preciado’s quest to win the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Saturday at Keeneland with Favorite Tale. After being stuck in quarantine, forced to train at three different locations, and having his van break down en route to Kentucky, Favorite Tale hit yet another obstacle on Monday when he drew the outside post in a field of 14 speedsters set to contest the six-furlong Sprint.

State gaming commission ends drug testing requirement for claimed horses

On Monday, the New York State Gaming Commission eliminated a state rule requiring all claimed horses to be tested for illegal drugs and medications, saying the revision would save the state approximately $250,000.

Under the revision, owners of claimed horses still will be able to request that the horse be tested for illegal drugs or medications, but the owner will be responsible for the expense of approximately $150. If a horse tests positive for a banned drug or a medication violation, the owner can void the claim, as was the case under the previous rule.

Barbara D. Livingston
Smooth Roller will go into the Breeders' Cup Classic without having a work since Oct. 17.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – As fast as Smooth Roller got to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, he’s taking the slow route there this week.

Smooth Roller has made just four starts, all since June, and in that time went from being an unraced maiden to the winner of the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita last time out. That victory that gave him a fees-paid berth in the $5 million Classic on Saturday.

Barbara D. Livingston
Kiaran McLaughlin, a native of Lexington, Ky., has four good shots to win during the Breeders' Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Like most natives of Lexington, Ky., trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is happy to see that after more than three decades, the Breeders’ Cup has finally come to this city’s historic racetrack, Keeneland.

McLaughlin’s six siblings, their spouses, and his mother will be in attendance for the two-day event Friday and Saturday. But what really has McLaughlin jazzed about the 32nd Breeders’ Cup is the four-horse contingent he is bringing, all of whom have a reasonable chance to win their respective races.
