Rutherienne will try extra eighth

Barbara D. Livingston
Rutherienne (right) wins the one-mile Noble Damsel at Belmont Park last month. She has never raced beyond 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Rutherienne will make her first start at 1 1/4 miles on turf in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 6, a race that may not include the 3-year-old filly Gozzip Girl.

Rutherienne, a winner of 11 of 22 starts and $1,280,671, has won 10 stakes in her three-year career, but has never run beyond 1 1/8 miles on turf. Trainer Christophe Clement said on Wednesday that the decision to point for the BC Filly and Mare Turf was made after Rutherienne breezed a half-mile in 48.86 seconds on the main track at Belmont Park on Wednesday.

Careless Jewel has passed every test

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Josie Carroll says that Careless Jewel has her work cut out for her in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic ? whether Zenyatta runs or not.

It was about twice as hot at Santa Anita early this week as it was at Woodbine over the weekend, but for Careless Jewel, adapting seems to be part of her makeup.

Whether she's running in hot weather or cold, or racing on dirt or a synthetic surface, Careless Jewel has thrived. She has been overshadowed in the 3-year-old filly division this year by Rachel Alexandra, but is clearly the second-best of her generation, with runaway victories including the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga two months ago.

Gladiatorus adds to hot pace

Andrew Watkins
Gladiatorus, a confirmed front-runner, won the $5 million Dubai Duty Free last March.

There will be pace in the Breeders' Cup Mile - and plenty of it, from the early look of things.

Cowboy Cal won the Oct. 10 Oak Tree Mile at Santa Anita after setting lively fractions, and he has led or pressed the leader in almost all of his 17 career starts. But Cowboy Cal has nothing on relentless front-runner Gladiatorus, who has been confirmed for the BC Mile after returning to form Oct. 11 in the Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua at the San Siro course in Italy.

Ventura will stay on her proven path

Going from a one-mile turf race against males to a seven-furlong main-track event for females like the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint isn't exactly the kind of race progression most of us would think of, but it worked famously last year for Ventura.

No BC Classic for Gitano Hernando

Benoit & Associates
Gitano Hernando will ship back to England to point toward the 2010 Dubai World Cup.

Gitano Hernando, the upset winner of the earlier this month, will bypass the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 7 at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting and instead be pointed to next year's Dubai World Cup, Barry Irwin, the head of co-owner Team Valor International, announced on Tuesday.

Gitano Hernando, 3, had raced just six times prior to the Goodwood, shipped over from Great Britain for the race, and was facing Grade 1 company for the first time. Irwin said that running in the Breeders' Cup following such an ambitious schedule would "compromise his future."

Twice Over may go in Classic

Saturday's Champion Stakes winner, Twice Over, could be headed to the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Ecstatic after the colt had landed his first Group 1 tally in the 1 1/4-mile test at Newmarket, Juddmonte Farm's racing manager, Teddy Grimthorpe said, "We hadn't been looking at the Breeders' Cup before today, but he has come back and won this race very well, so the Classic would be under consideration. The question mark is that the race is on a surface that he's never raced on."

Don't count on Kodiak Kowboy

Barbara D. Livingston
The 3-year-old Capt. Candyman Can is headed to the Sprint off a good second in the Phoenix.

While Zensational, who will be the favorite, continues to train up to the the 2009 Breeders' Cup Sprint, his competition came into sharper focus last weekend following exciting runnings of the Grade 1 Ancient Title and Grade 3 Phoenix stakes.

Gayego will likely be the second choice in the Sprint following his come-from-behind 1 1/4-length decision over Crown of Thorns in the Ancient Title.
