Einstein shipping to California for Classic

Einstein, the winner of the Santa Anita Handicap in March over the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita, completed his local preparations with a sharp workout Sunday at Churchill Downs and was to be flown Tuesday to California.

Julien Leparoux, who has the mount on Einstein for the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Classic, was aboard for the work for trainer Helen Pitts, who said Einstein could fit as well as any in the $5 million race.

"He likes that track out there, and who knows?" said Pitts. "I think he's tough right now. He's matured a lot, and I think he's doing great now."

Summer Bird drills for Classic

Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird worked on Sunday for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 7.

Summer Bird, who won his third Grade 1 of 2009 in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park earlier this month, worked five furlongs in 1:00.45 under jockey Kent Desormeaux, who flew from New York for the workout.

The workout, conducted between the second and third races on Sunday, satisfied trainer Tim Ice's desire to have Summer Bird have a pre-Breeders' Cup workout in the afternoon.

Mine That Bird works faster than expected

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird worked five furlongs in 58.20 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday, which equaled the fastest of 58 recorded works at the distance.

The workout was faster than trainer Chip Woolley intended, but Mine That Bird had an excuse - a fellow Breeders' Cup runner was on the horizon. The filly Lethal Heat, a candidate for the BC Ladies' Classic, broke off about 10 lengths in front of Mine That Bird and gave the 3-year-old a distant focus.

Classic still possible after Zenyatta work

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Although no decision has been made on which race Zenyatta will compete in in this year's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting, she was put through a strong workout on Friday morning at Hollywood Park that trainer John Shirreffs said "leaves open the option for the Classic."

Zenyatta worked in company with two horses who joined her at intervals throughout the six-furlong work, and the result was drill that was officially timed in 1:11.20, the best time of 10 at the distance and faster by a full second than the second-best work.

McPeek pushing maiden winner

Already expected to have a chance to win the $2 million Juvenile Fillies with Beautician, trainer Ken McPeek hopes to increase his chances if he can get Connie and Michael into the race as well. She earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 95. She was the 5-2 favorite in a field of 12.

Dublin staying home

Grade 1 winner Dublin bounced back quickly from his fifth-place finish in the Champagne, but even after a big workout Monday at Churchill Downs, trainer D. Wayne Lukas said the Hopeful winner will not ship west for the Juvenile.

"Artificial surfaces turned the Breeders' Cup upside down," Lukas said this week. "He might go out there and love it, but we'd rather not subject him to the uncertainty."

Lukas noted that, as his horses race primarily in Kentucky and New York, "I never have to run on artificial."

Zensational still looms large

Zensational may be out of sight, but he's certainly not out of the minds of the connections of any other horse with designs on this year's Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Zensational, who is expected to be the odds-on favorite to win the Sprint, has not started since capturing Del Mar's Grade 1 Pat O'Brien on Sept. 6, The victory was the fourth in a row for Zensational, who has not been defeated at distances of seven furlongs or shorter over artificial surfaces in five starts, including his maiden win over the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita earlier this winter.

Godolphin still sorting out strategy

With the likes of Girolamo, Midshipman, Pyro, and Regal Ransom all pointing to the Breeders' Cup, Godolphin Racing is trying to figure out how best to divide and conquer with its male main-track runners. Midshipman is going in the BC Dirt Mile, Pyro in either the Dirt Mile or the Sprint. Girolamo and Regal Ransom are also possible for the Dirt Mile, but are being considered for the BC Classic, too, according to Rick Mettee, the United States-based assistant to Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin's head trainer.
