Lethal Heat may enter two BC races

Lethal Heat is pre-entered in both the Ladies' Classic on Nov. 6 and the Turf Sprint on Nov. 7, and as far as trainer and co-owner Barry Abrams is concerned, he would like to enter in both next Tuesday. That doesn't necessarily mean she will run in both races. And, because of Breeders' Cup rules, he might not even get the chance.

Mastercraftsman likely for Dirt Mile

Just last week before the field for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile began to finalize, the race appeared to be one of the most wide-open Breeders' Cup races, seemingly lacking a clear favorite.

Not any longer. When pre-entries were announced Wednesday, it became clear that the Dirt Mile, which will be contested over Santa Anita's synthetic Pro-Ride surface, would have a prohibitive public choice in Mastercraftsman - provided his connections stick to their pre-entered preference to run him in the Dirt Mile, rather than the Classic.

Brown changes plans for Maram

As Monday's pre-entry deadline for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita grew near, trainer Chad Brown had a change of goals for his 3-year-old filly Maram.

Instead of trying the $2 million Ladies' Classic over 1 1/8 miles on the main track, his original intention, Brown opted to pre-enter Maram in the Filly and Mare Turf, which will be run on the same Nov. 6 program. The last time Maram ran at Santa Anita, she pulled an 11-1 upset in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last year.

Careless Jewel, Lookin at Lucky work

Barbara D. Livingston
In what will be her only workout over Santa Anita's Pro-Ride surface prior to the Breeders' Cup, Careless Jewel went quick early and then coasted home late to cover six furlongs in 1:11.20, a move that pleased her trainer, Josie Carroll.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Encouraging workouts Tuesday at Santa Anita by streaking 3-year-old filly Careless Jewel and unbeaten 2-year-old colt Lookin at Lucky suggest both remain in top form into the Breeders' Cup.

Careless Jewel (Ladies' Classic) and Lookin at Lucky (Juvenile) were among six BC candidates to work, including four trained by Bob Baffert. In addition to Lookin at Lucky, Baffert worked Always a Princess (Juvenile Fillies), Zensational (Sprint), and Richard's Kid (Classic). Colonel John (Classic) also worked.

Lisa's Kitten fine after traffic jam

Lisa's Kitten is set for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 6 after getting through traffic for a one-length win in the $100,000 La Senorita on Saturday night at Retama Park. She closed from well back for a Beyer Speed Figure of 73.

"She gave us a scare when she got in some trouble," said Mike Maker, who trains Lisa's Kitten for Ken and Sarah Ramsey. "To overcome it and finish the way that she did, I was very happy."

Maker said Leparoux, who was aboard Lisa's Kitten, has the mount in the Breeders' Cup.

Gozzip Girl will miss Breeders' Cup

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Tom Albertrani said Gozzip Girl will probably make her next start in 2010. "There are no plans at the moment," he said.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Gozzip Girl, winner of the Grade 1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park in July, will pass the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 6 after trainer Tom Albertrani said he was not happy with her condition.

Albertrani said Tuesday that Gozzip Girl has struggled to maintain weight in recent weeks and was not pre-entered for the BC Filly and Mare Turf on Monday. The Breeders' Cup was scheduled to announce the list of pre-entries for all races on Wednesday.
