BC sets race order, offers jockey bet

Breeders' Cup plans to offer a parimutuel bet on which jockey has the most wins in the 14 Breeders' Cup races, scheduled for Nov. 6-7 at Santa Anita Park, the organization announced on Thursday.

Though the field for the wager has yet to be set, the bet will likely have 14 wagering interests, according to Ken Kirchner, the simulcasting consultant for Breeders' Cup. The 14th betting interest will be a field comprising all jockeys that are not named individually, and ties will be treated as a dead heat, Kirchner said. Wagering will open on Nov. 5, after riders have been named.

Zenyatta likely to test males in Classic

Benoit & Associates
Zenyatta was cross-entered in the BC Classic and Ladies' Classic, with the Classic listed as her first preference.

In the weeks leading up to the Breeders' Cup, much has been made as to who's not going to be competing, most notably Rachel Alexandra and Sea the Stars. But just look at who is expected to show up. Nine of last year's 14 Breeders' Cup race winners - and a BC race winner from 2006 - were among the pre-entries announced on Wednesday for this year's Breeders' Cup, which will be held Nov. 6-7 at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.

Yankee Injunuity partners ante up

STICKNEY, Ill. - No one would suggest that Hawthorne Race Course is a hotbed of Breeders' Cup activity. Even so, Hawthorne will have one Breeders' Cup representative in Los Angeles next weekend.

That would be Yankee Injunuity, who earned a guaranteed slot in the BC Turf Sprint by winning the July 11 Arlington Sprint, a BC Win and You're In race. Win and You're In only guarantees a starting-gate berth after entry fees are paid, but Yankee Injunuity's owners elected to put up the dough on the strength of a solid six-start 2009 campaign.

Cloudy's Knight switches directions

A case of mistaken identity - well, sort of - might be what landed Cloudy's Knight in the leadoff race in the two-day Breeders' Cup, the $500,000 Marathon.

After Cloudy's Knight won the Oct. 22 Sycamore Stakes at Keeneland, trainer Jonathan Sheppard said he and the gelding's owners had agreed they likely would bypass the Breeders' Cup in favor of the $150,000 Red Smith Handicap, a 1 3/8-mile turf race on Nov. 7.

Mott has two for latest try in BC Mile

Barbara D. Livingston
Bill Mott has twice sent out the second-place finisher in the Mile. This year he has Courageous Cat, winner of the Hall of Fame at Saratoga, and Mr. Sidney, who won the Maker's Mark at Keeneland.

That four Europeans and three Godolphin-owned horses were among the 14 pre-entries for the Breeders' Cup Mile roused little surprise. That Bill Mott has two horses in the race - that was a little surprising.

Mott's pair certainly belong in top-class competition on their best day. It's just that neither Courageous Cat nor Mr. Sidney had his best day when last seen racing. Mr. Sidney finished a distant third in the Shadwell Turf Mile last out at Keeneland, while Courageous Cat was a close third as the odds-on favorite in the Jamaica Handicap at Aqueduct.

Amen Hallelujah forced out of Cup

Amen Hallelujah, the third-place finisher in the Grade 1 Darley Alcbiades, was not pre-entered in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf as expected due to an ankle injury, trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said.

"She got to kicking in her stall and screwed her back ankle up," Dutrow said. "She looks like she'll make it back just fine."

Dutrow said he wasn't sure if Amen Hallelujah would make it back to the races this year.

Breen has high hopes for Bickersons

Trainer Kelly Breen said the excitable nature of the 2-year-old filly Bickersons made it tough to train her as hard as he needed to get her fit for a Grade 1 race. In the last few weeks, however, Breen has thrown caution to the wind and has picked up the training regimen with the filly. Or, as he put it Wednesday: "It's no holds barred for the Breeders' Cup."

Fatal Bullet back for another shot

Eight horses went postward in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Sprint. Only one of them, Fatal Bullet, will be back to try again this year.

Fatal Bullet finished second in last year's Sprint, beaten less than two lengths by defending champion Midnight Lute. And trainer Reade Baker is hoping "been there, done that" will help his horse's chances of winning the second time around.

In the Slips joining Mullins's stable

Trainer Jeff Mullins's stable will soon be home to a sharp European filly, In the Slips, who was among the 17 horses pre-entered Monday in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In the Slips is one of just four in the Juvenile Filly Turf who has won multiple races on grass, and one of six who has won a stakes on the surface. She is to arrive Stateside Tuesday after being purchased privately by Michael House off back-to-back wins in England.

Conduit leads trio of British standouts

Thanks be to trainer Michael Stoute and owner Andrew Lloyd-Webber, for without their support this year s Breeders Cup Turf would have the look of a good Grade 2 race. The presence of the Stoute-trained pair of the defending champ, Conduit, and Spanish Moon, along with Lloyd-Webber s John Gosden-trained Dar Re Mi redeems this edition of the Turf. The outcome of the race is very much in their hands.
