Informed Decision sets sights on Ventura

With her up-in-the-shadow-of-the-wire victory in last Saturday's at Keeneland, a win that kept her undefeated on synthetic surfaces, Informed Decision might have secured the role as second favorite in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Now, Informed Decision can set her sights on race favorite and defending Filly and Mare Sprint winner Ventura, much like she did when the two met last April in the Vinery Madison Stakes at Keeneland.

Blind Luck has history on her side

History - as well as talent - may be on the side of Blind Luck in this year's $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Though the Juvenile Fillies looks more contentious than usual, Blind Luck figures to go off the favorite based on her victory in the Oak Leaf Stakes, run over the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita, the same track that hosts this year's Breeders' Cup. Favorites in the Juvenile Fillies have won 15 of the previous 25 runnings, including the last seven.

Conduit eyes BC Turf, Japan Cup

Although Michael Stoute is apparently pointing defending Breeders' Cup Turf titleholder Conduit to the Japan Cup on Nov. 29, it is still possible that Conduit, winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, could run in the Turf. There will be 22 days between the Turf and the Japan Cup, while the break between the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe - in which Conduit finished fourth, just two heads behind runner-up Youmzain - and the race in Tokyo is eight weeks.

Icon Project looks unlikely for Ladies' Classic

Icon Project, who skipped last Sunday's Spinster Stakes at Keeneland, has a "less than 50-50 chance" of running in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic on Nov. 6 at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting, trainer Marty Wolfson said Wednesday.

Gitano Hernando an inspiration

Benoit & Associates
Gitano Hernando (right) wins last Saturday's Goodwood, defeating, among others, the winners of this year's Kentucky Derby and Pacific Classic.

The one-two finish by Raven's Pass and Henrythenavigator in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic was certain to embolden Europeans to head en masse to the race this year, and if they needed any more encouragement to run against America's best on a synthetic surface, they got it last Saturday, when the previously unheralded Gitano Hernando scored an upset victory in the , the final prep at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting for the BC Classic.

Landry likes two turns for Bridgetown

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Journeyman rider Robert Landry seemingly reached the pinnacle of his career when he captured the $1 million Queen's Plate, Canada's most prestigious race, aboard Niigon in 2004. But Landry, a 47-year-old Toronto native, is in the midst of what could end up being his most lucrative year ever, thanks mainly to Careless Jewel, whom he guided to victories in the Grade 1 Alabama and the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks during the summer.

Sheppard wants to see how Cloudy's Knight likes synthetic

Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard said he will consider the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Marathon for the Sovereign Award winner Cloudy's Knight, who on Sept. 19 won his lone start of the year, the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Turf.

"I guess we'd have to think about it if he seems to like the synthetic surface here [at Keeneland] and he runs well in the Sycamore," set for Oct. 22 on Keeneland turf, said Sheppard. "He's very fresh, and it's the end of the year, so the timing [16 days] wouldn't be a big concern."

Biancone will let Ball Four tell him what to do

The 8-year-old Ball Four had just a two-race schedule in 2007 before making three starts in 2008. This year he might even stretch that to four races.

Trainer Patrick Biancone said Tuesday that Ball Four could start in the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita, provided he trains well in the weeks ahead. Monday marked his first breeze that goal, a half-mile breeze in 48 seconds at Santa Anita.

"He has old legs, you know," said Biancone. "We'll let him talk to us."

Hatheer's fate rests on performance in Jessamine

The prep party's moving west.

A handful of fillies who were scratched from last weekend's Miss Grillo at Belmont Park when the race was moved from turf to dirt because of inclement weather are being rerouted to Keeneland.
