LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the poor performance of the filly Life At Ten in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Churchill Downs last Friday, the chief steward of the commission said on Thursday.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Zenyatta took one look at the attractive pink-and-white floral arrangement delivered to her Wednesday at Hollywood Park before deciding what to do – she reached out and took a big bite.
“Wait a minute,” trainer John Shirreffs said. “Don’t let her eat it, until I get a picture of it.”
Racing’s queen has returned home, and Zenyatta remains the same playful ham she was even before she captivated the sport with a gallant runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Robert Hansan, a resident of Reston, Va., used a bold late bet in the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge handicapping contest on Friday and Saturday at Churchill Downs to grab the top prize of $137,000.
With only the Breeders’ Cup Classic left, Hansan placed his entire bankroll of $7,236 on Blame to win, a wager that returned $44,863. The win vaulted Hansan into first place by a wide margin. James Henry, the second-place finisher, had a bankroll of $30,010.
Awesome Feather, who improved to 6 for 6 by winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies for Jacks or Better Farm and trainer Stanley Gold, and was purchased by Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs Farm for $2.3 million at Fasig-Tipton’s November sale Sunday night, is to be trained by Chad Brown.
“She’s supposed to leave Kentucky today and arrive at Palm Meadows tomorrow,” Brown confirmed Tuesday afternoon. “I’ll talk to the Stronachs and try to map out a campaign with her; the new program with the Black-Eyed Susan is very appealing.”
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The five leading contenders for Horse of the Year were all in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday at Churchill Downs, and though two of them finished just a head apart for the win, with Blame holding off Zenyatta in a thriller, the debate over who should be Horse of the Year seems certain to last at least another two months, right through the Eclipse Awards on Jan. 17 in Miami Beach, Fla.
Following Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Churchill Downs, in which Prince Will I Am was disqualified from second and placed 10th for interference, owner Susie Atkins of Casa Farms would have a right to feel disgusted.
Losing $90,000 in earnings, the purse differential between second and 10th-place, she could feel anger toward her jockey, Javier Castellano, who the stewards suspended six days for careless riding aboard Prince Will I Am. Or she could feel dismay toward the stewards for the disqualification.
