Arc winner Workforce to race in 2011

Workforce, the heavy morning-line favorite who was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Turf because of course conditions, will return to race next year at age 4, his connections announced Monday.

Workforce scored victories in the Epsom Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2010, and came to Churchill the hot BC Turf favorite off his Arc win. But after training daily on the Churchill turf from Tuesday through Friday, Workforce was pulled from the race Saturday morning because his connections did not want to race over grass they considered too firm for their horse.

Champ Pegasus to get a break

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Champ Pegasus, runner-up in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Turf, will be pointed to the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting and is unlikely to start again this year, trainer Richard Mandella said.

There was some consideration between Mandella and owner B. Wayne Hughes about sending Champ Pegasus to the Japan Cup on Nov. 28, but Mandella said that various factors, notably the relatively quick turnaround and a trans-Pacific journey, made that impractical.

Calhoun put his brand on the Breeder's Cup

Chamberlain Bridge, with Jamie Theriot up, wins the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bret Calhoun had his name all over the 2010 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs – and his initials, too. Much of the tack and equipment used by Calhoun and his employees are monogrammed with a blue “BC” on white backgrounds, which seems quite fitting for what the 46-year-old trainer accomplished here last weekend.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The decision by the owners of Unrivaled Belle to bring the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner back for a 5-year-old campaign is only part of the reason trainer Bill Mott probably can’t wait for 2011.

An unheard-of day for Zenyatta

Chris McCarron, who won the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Alysheba under considerably less illumination than was provided last Saturday at Churchill Downs, saw what was happening from ground level, standing as he was about a hundred yards past the finish.

“Everyone’s asking me why he let her drop back so far,” said McCarron, figuring the listener would know the “he” was Mike Smith and the “her” was Zenyatta, who had just lost by the length of Blame’s head for the first time in her 20-race career.

Goldikova, the only horse to win three Breeders’ Cup races, will return to race in 2011, trainer Freddie Head confirmed Monday, saying that if all goes well her season will end with a fourth start in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

“Absolutely she will race again,” Head said. “She took her race very well.”

Zenyatta loses nothing in her fans' eyes

Fans gather outside the fence separating the street from the barn area at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning to watch Zenyatta graze.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Zenyatta finished second in her final career start Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but she remained first in the hearts of her adoring fans here Sunday morning at Churchill Downs, literally stopping traffic on a public road adjacent to the barn area when motorists realized she was out grazing.

The scene brought a smile to the face of Zenyatta’s trainer, John Shirreffs, who has allowed unusual access to the mare, both on the road, when Zenyatta raced both here and at Oaklawn Park, and at Zenyatta’s home base at Hollywood Park.
