Breeders' Cup Mile under consideration for Canford Cliffs

Trainer Richard Hannon sent out Strong Suit to win the Group 3 Jersey Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs in the first race at Royal Ascot on Wednesday, but there was bigger news from the Hannon camp, with a trip to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill now considered a strong option for Canford Cliffs, who won the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes on Tuesday and ranks as Europe’s top miler.

Breeders' Cup adds new 2-year-old dirt sprint

Horsemen with top-class 2-year-olds will now have a fifth option to win a Breeders’ Cup race, a six-furlong sprint on the dirt that Breeders’ Cup announced on Tuesday will be added to the current 14-race lineup at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Nov. 4-5 this year.

Belmont: Tizway best in Met Mile

ELMONT, N.Y. - Perseverance and loyalty were rewarded in a big way Monday at Belmont Park as the 6-year-old Tizway rolled to a 2 3/4-length victory in the Grade 1, $500,000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.

It was the first Grade 1 victory for Tizway, who had run in five previous Grade 1 races starting with the 2009 Whitney - in which he was fourth - and including last year's Met Mile, in which he was third to Quality Road.

Australia: Black Caviar earns Breeders' Cup berth

Black Caviar, the top-rated horse in the world according to the World Thoroughbred Rankings, earned an automatic berth in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint by virtue of her 2 3/4-length win Saturday in the Group 1 Darley T.J. Smith Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Australia.

Unlike in past years, winners of 2011 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races such as the T.J. Smith will have their entry fees into Breeders’ Cup races waived. Race winners outside North America also will be provided with a $20,000 travel allowance.

Greg Avioli resigns as Breeders' Cup CEO

Greg Avioli, the president and CEO of Breeders' Cup Limited, resigned on Friday to take a position with a new racing and gaming company, according to a release from Breeders' Cup.

The Breeders' Cup board will meet next week to discuss interim leadership and how it will choose  the organization’s next CEO, Breeders' Cup chairman Bill Farish said in the release.

Breeders' Cup Classic voted 'NTRA 2010 Moment of the Year'

The Breeders' Cup Classic, where Blame narrowly beat Zenyatta, was voted the Moment of the Year.

Voters at the website of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association tabbed the victory by Blame in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic as the “2010 NTRA Moment of the Year,” the association announced on Thursday.

The victory by Blame over fellow Horse of the Year candidate Zenyatta was selected by 36 percent of the respondents among 11 other races, according to the NTRA. Zenyatta had won all 19 of her previous starts prior to the narrow defeat.

Breeders' Cup gets 160 international stallion nominations in first week

The owners of 160 stallions based outside the U.S. and Canada have paid fees that make all of the stallions’ progeny eligible to run in the 14 Breeders’ Cup races, the Breeders’ Cup announced on Monday, seven days after nominations opened under a new structure for international stallions.
