Hollywood Park: First Dude wins a tight one in Hollywood Gold Cup

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The transformation of First Dude from consistent also-ran to major stakes winner is complete.

On Saturday, First Dude won his first Grade 1 stakes, and third consecutive race, in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, earning a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs in November. Last year, First Dude finished second or third in six consecutive graded stakes for 3-year-olds and was eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Courageous Cat’s gritty win in Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park left winning jockey Patrick Valenzuela in a forecasting mood after the race.

“This horse is so much better than when I rode him in the Shadwell Mile,” Valenzuela said, referring to a third-place finish in the Grade 1 race at Keeneland last fall. “I can almost guarantee he’ll win the Breeders’ Cup Mile, even if they bring that filly over.”

Earnestly upsets Takarazuka Kinen, earns berth in Breeders' Cup Turf

Earnestly won the first Grade 1 race of his career in a 12-1 upset in Sunday’s $3.2 million Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin Racecourse in Japan, earning an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in November.

A 6-year-old horse, Earnestly was always near the front and won by 1 1/2 lengths over Buena Vista, the 5-year-old mare who is a five-time Grade 1 winner and was Japan’s Horse of the Year in 2009 and 2010.

No harm in adding Juvenile Sprint to Breeders' Cup lineup

The announcement last week that a six-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds will become the 15th Breeders’ Cup race starting this fall has prompted some hand-wringing over the expansion of the Cup lineup in general and an emphasis on speed and precocity in particular. While it’s reasonable to raise such concerns, the new Juvenile Sprint seems on balance like a healthy addition to the program, so long as people keep it in proper perspective.
