Beyer: Borell getting plenty of ink with Runhappy in Sprint

Maria Borell sports a tattoo of Sunday Silence, a favorite horse of her childhood, across her back.

The 32nd Breeders’ Cup figures to be dominated by men who are well established at the upper echelon of the training profession. Hall of Famers Bob Baffert and Richard Mandella will saddle the leading contenders in the $5 million Classic. Earlier on Saturday’s card at Keeneland, two of the three winningest trainers of all time, Steve Asmussen and Jerry Hollendorfer, will be among the participants in the $1.5 million Sprint.

Breeders' Cup Distaff: Sheer Drama will start from post 14

Barbara D. Livingston
Sheer Drama, winner of the Personal Ensign at Saratoga, will start from post 14 in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sheer Drama drew the far outside post as one of a handful of favorites in a remarkably contentious renewal of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Friday at Keeneland.

Winner of the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap and Grade 1 Personal Ensign in her last two starts, Sheer Drama will be ridden by Joe Bravo when breaking from post 14 in the 1 1/8-mile Distaff, for which a full gate of 14 (plus one also-eligible) was drawn Monday evening at the track. She was pegged the 9-2 second choice on a morning line set by Mike Battaglia.

Breeders' Cup Turf: Golden Horn will break from rail in quest for history

Bill Denver/Equi-Photo
Big Blue Kitten wins the United Nations at Monmouth on July 5. The Bowling Green and Sword Dancer, both at Saratoga, are on his schedule in August.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Golden Horn will begin his quest to become the first same-year winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Cup Turf from post 1, a draw that’s not ideal but which Golden Horn ought to be able to overcome if his superiority shines through Saturday.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Speed bunched together

Barbara D. Livingston
Liam's Map is the likely favorite for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on Friday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The presence of the brilliantly fast Liam’s Map makes Friday’s $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile a difficult race to win for any of his 10 rivals.

Steve Asmussen, the trainer of one of those opponents, Tapiture, felt that his horse’s chances improved somewhat at Monday’s post-position draw. Tapiture, last year’s Dirt Mile runner-up, drew post 9 in the 11-horse field, but Asmussen was happy to see the bulk of the speed draw right alongside each other. Bradester, Liam’s Map, and Mr. Z drew posts 2, 3, and 4 in the Dirt Mile.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Favorite Tale's hard luck continues

Barbara D. Livingston
Favorite Tale, who breezed four furlongs Monday, drew post 14 for the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Just about anything that could go wrong has gone wrong in trainer Guadalupe Preciado’s quest to win the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Saturday at Keeneland with Favorite Tale. After being stuck in quarantine, forced to train at three different locations, and having his van break down en route to Kentucky, Favorite Tale hit yet another obstacle on Monday when he drew the outside post in a field of 14 speedsters set to contest the six-furlong Sprint.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf: Euros vs. U.S. horses

John Bambury
Stephanie's Kitten, shown winning the Grade 1 Flower Bowl last out, leads a trio for trainer Chad Brown in the Filly and Mare Turf.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The stage is set for an international showdown Saturday in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Keeneland after a full field of 12, plus a pair of also-eligibles, was drawn Monday.

Five European-based runners, topped by likely favorite Legatissimo, are matched against seven U.S.-based horses in the body of the race, including a trio of Chad Brown-trained U.S. runners in Dacita, Stephanie’s Kitten, and Watsdachances.

The other four Americans joining the Brown trio are Hard Not to Like, Photo Call, Sentiero Italia, and Sharla Rae.

Karakontie draws wide again in Mile repeat bid

Nikki Sherman
Karakontie will try to become the fifth repeat winner of the Breeders' Cup Mile.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Karakontie drew post 11 on Monday for his repeat bid in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile, but that draw, while less than ideal, hardly seems impossible considering that Karakontie won the 2014 Mile after breaking from post 14.

More problematic than the outside draw for Karakontie are the horses who will stand with him in the starting gate Saturday. From top to bottom, the 2015 Mile field looks tougher than last year’s, and there is a cracking contingent of overseas horses in town for the race.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Ward trio gets lucky

Barbara D. Livingston
Undrafted (left), the runner-up last year, drew post 3 for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, which pleased trainer Wesley Ward.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - With three of the 14 starters in the race, Wesley Ward had to hold his breath a little longer than his fellow horsemen while post positions were being drawn on Monday for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. But in the end, Ward came out smiling on all fronts, with Undrafted, Green Mask and The Great War all being assigned starting positions he believes will enhance their chances of winning the 5 1/2-furlong dash on the grass Saturday at Keeneland.

Nyquist draws post No. 13 for Juvenile

Shigeki Kikkawa
Nyquist, shown working Friday at Santa Anita, enters the Breeders' Cup Juvenile perfect in four starts.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Nyquist does not enter Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with quite the fanfare usually bestowed upon an undefeated 2-year-old with a pair of Grade 1 victories on his résumé.

His bandwagon might have lost a few more members Monday when Nyquist drew post No. 13 for the Juvenile at Keeneland, where he will have to use speed to avoid getting hung out too wide entering the first turn.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Unbeaten Songbird, Rachel's Valentina clash

Barbara D. Livingston
Songbird, shown at Santa Anita on Oct. 6, will start in post 10 in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland.

In their showdown for a divisional title, unbeaten Grade 1 winners Songbird and Rachel’s Valentina will be asked to prove their supremacy not only against one another, but against eight rivals who got a break Monday at the post-position draw when the two favorites drew to the outside.
