Ernie Banker seeks first stakes win in Highland Ice

Coady Photography
Ernie Banker (left) will be looking for his first stakes victory in Tuesday's $50,000 Highland Ice Stakes at Will Rogers Downs.

Horses representing a variety of statebred programs will face off Tuesday in a redrawn edition of the $50,000 Highland Ice Sakes at Will Rogers Downs. The race was canceled last week due to an issue with a small area of the track surface. The Highland Ice again drew six runners, led by the accomplished New York-bred sprinter Ernie Banker.

Ernie Banker is a 12-time winner who has earned more than $300,000. But there’s one thing missing from his résumé – a stakes win – and he figures to go favored when he attempts to nail one down in the Highland Ice.

Arabian Knight, shown winning the Southwest earlier this year, was a $2.3 million sale at last year's OBS spring juvenile auction.

A little more than a decade in, Top Line Sales has found its place among the top ranks of the 2-year-old in training consignors.

Jimbo and Torie Gladwell’s operation, which sold juveniles for the first time in 2012, counts a number of seven-figure horses among its graduates. Those include an Uncle Mo colt who topped the 2022 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s spring sale at $2.3 million, the sale-topping price and finishing as the second-most paid for a 2-year-old in North America last year. Now named Arabian Knight, the colt is an unbeaten graded stakes winner.

Old-timer Sunrise Journey will try to wire Siren Lure Stakes

Air Force Red, shown winning the Joe Hernandez down the hill on Dec. 31, could go favored in Sunday's Siren Lure Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The complexion of Santa Anita weekend sprint stakes gained clarity from the decision to switch front-runner Sunrise Journey to turf for the $100,000 Siren Lure Stakes on Sunday, rather than keep him on dirt for the Grade 3 Kona Gold Stakes on Saturday.

Sunrise Journey’s pending scratch from the Kona Gold softens the pace scenario for heavily favored Brickyard Ride, who is expected to lead the Saturday dirt stakes gate to wire. Sunrise Journey will try to do the same Sunday on turf.

Talamo sanctioned for whip violation

Barbara D. Livingston
Joe Talamo was cited for his ride on Time for Trouble in the eighth race at Keeneland on Thursday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Time for Trouble posted a $37.50 upset of the featured eighth race Thursday at Keeneland, but the victory will come at a cost for his jockey, Joe Talamo, who struck the Irish-bred with his whip eight times, two over the limit imposed by new crop rules mandated by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.

Talamo will forfeit 10 percent of his share of the purse, or $7,347, and will have to sit out one day of racing, which the 33-year-old rider said will be one of the last three cards of the Keeneland spring meet this coming week.
