ARCADIA, Calif. – Whomever wins the Santa Maria Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita – Adare Manor is favored – will score her first victory at the Grade 2 level. It will be a nice attribute for a future broodmare, and indicative of the lack of depth in the female dirt division here.

Gunning will race around two turns for the first time in the Dig A Diamond Stakes at Oaklawn. She is a 4-year-old half-sister to Kentucky Derby hopeful Mage.

One week out from the Kentucky Derby, this Saturday of North American racing is the calm before the storm. Rain on the East Coast and short fields in Southern California have us looking farther afield for three plays.

Yes I Am Free must overcome fast pace, high weight and, perhaps, a surface switch

Yes I Am Free typically goes to the lead, and he might have company there in Saturday's feature at Gulfstream.

Yes I Am Free typically goes to the lead, and he might have company there in Saturday's feature at Gulfstream.

Weather and pace could well go a long ways in determining the outcome of Saturday’s main event at Gulfstream Park, a $60,000 overnight handicap carded at five furlongs on the turf. Yes I Am Free, winner of the Grade 3 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint in February, goes postward the 125 pound highweight and will concede from 3 to 10 pounds to his nine rivals while in search of his third win in four starts in 2023.

Balnikhov faces much softer competition in the San Francisco Mile than he did in his last race, the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile.

In the last year, Dicey Mo Chara has shown a versatility in graded stakes on turf in California at distances ranging from 1 1/8 miles to 1 1/2 miles. He has won only once in that span, but the gelding seldom runs a poor race.

The range of Dicey Mo Chara’s ability will be tested when he goes a mile on turf in Saturday’s Grade 3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate Fields.

Frank's Rockette will be a heavy favorite in the Roxelana Stakes, the opening-day feature on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The late John Asher got a kick out of calling the 2004 Kentucky Derby “the demolition derby” until higher-ups informed him to stop doing so, lest customers get the wrong idea.

Coppelia will take on Frank's Rockette again in the Roxelana Stakes on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Phil Bauer didn’t like what he saw when picking up the overnight for the Saturday opener at Churchill Downs.

“I was hoping Frank’s Rockette would go in the Grade 1 instead,” said Bauer, who will saddle Coppelia in search of an upset of heavily favored Frank’s Rockette when the Roxelana Stakes is held as the featured ninth of 10 races on a Saturday night program that kicks off the 44-day Churchill spring meet.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The stakes debut of two promising 3-year-old fillies and the return of a Grade 1-winning 3-year-old colt from 2022 could make for a successful Saturday at Aqueduct for trainer Chad Brown.

That is, if Mother Nature doesn’t intervene.

Ancient Peace has pace advantage over late-running Paris Secret

If Broadway Girls (above) duels with Ancient Peace in the Providencia, the race could set up for late-running Paris Secret.

ARCADIA, Calif. – By the time upset candidate Paris Secret launches her rally in the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, popular opinion is that favorite Ancient Peace will be already gone.

However, contrarians have reasons to back the upset candidate in the mile and one-eighth turf race for 3-year-old fillies, despite the favorite’s conspicuous attributes.

Jill Jitterbug wins at Turfway Park in January. In her last two starts, she has finished second in stakes there.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Under the radar Kentucky trainer Ryan Walsh is no stranger to success at Woodbine, having won four stakes here with Cactus Kris and Tulsa Queen in the mid-2010s.

In Saturday’s $125,000 Star Shoot Stakes, Walsh sends out stretch-runner Jill Jitterbug, who should be among the favorites in the six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies.
