Lloyds Logic will be tested in Auburn Stakes following layoff

Lloyds Logic, winner of the 2022 Gottstein Futurity, is the horse to beat in the $50,000 Auburn Stakes going six furlongs on Sunday at Emerald Downs. The card also includes the $50,000 Seattle Stakes.

Lloyds Logic races for George Todaro and is trained by Tom Wenzel.

“We wanted to get a prep in him here. They ran two allowance races, but we weren’t eligible for either of them,” Wenzel said in regard to why Lloyds Logic will step into the stakes ranks off a long rest.

King's Plate hopeful Stanley House takes another swing

Michael Burns
Luckman ( wearing blinkers) wins last year's Toronto Cup. He dropps out of stakes comapny while making his third start of the year in race 9 on Sunday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – King’s Plate hopeful Stanley House will take on older opposition again in Sunday’s seventh race at Woodbine, a first-level allowance route with a $32,000 claiming option.

Stanley House rallied for second in both of his 2-year-old outings while sprinting for trainer Mike DePaulo, who took the son of hot young sire Army Mule to Gulfstream Park for the winter.

Charlie's Wish back sprinting in Game Face Stakes

Charlie's Wish at TAM Jan 14 2023
Tom Keyser
Charlie's Wish will need some pace to set her up in the 6 1/2-furlong Game Face on Saturday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer David Fawkes hadn’t originally planned on taking Charlie’s Wish to Churchill Downs to run on Kentucky Derby weekend, and he certainly didn’t plan on running her two turns once she got there. But he was pleasantly surprised when his versatile 3-year-old filly finished a close and game second against a strong group of allowance rivals in a race contested just a half-hour or so after the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.

Pegasus favorite Kingsbarns still difficult to measure

Kingsbarns works at CD April 29 2023
Debra A. Roma
Kingsbarns’s Louisiana Derby win over Disarm looks good on paper, but can he build on it in Saturday’s Pegasus Stakes?

Another Kentucky Derby pace casualty, Kingsbarns, is set to rebound from a poor showing on the first Saturday in May.

Kingsbarns breaks from the outside post in an eight-entrant renewal of the $150,000 Pegasus Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile Monmouth Park prep for the Grade 1 Haskell next month. He can run last and still place considerably higher than in the Derby, where Kingsbarns checked in 14th of 18.

Goodnight Olive (right) was hemmed in behind Matareya (center) and inside of Wicked Halo during the stretch run of the Derby City Distaff.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Goodnight Olive had her seven-race win streak snapped when she finished third in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff six weeks ago at Churchill Downs. It wasn’t all her fault.

The champion female sprinter of 2022, Goodnight Olive was trapped inside for virtually the entire seven furlongs of the race, kept in by Tyler Gaffalione aboard Wicked Halo. Meanwhile, Matareya got away from both of them to win the Grade 1 stakes by one length over Wicked Halo, who was a length better than Goodnight Olive.

It’s comeback day for the Chad Brown barn Saturday at Monmouth Park, where Grade 1 winners Tribhuvan and Gina Romantica start in Grade 3 turf stakes on Haskell Preview Day.

Tribhuvan is one of just six entered in the $150,000 Monmouth, a 1 1/8-mile prep for the Grade 1 United Nations over 1 3/8 miles. Tribhuvan wired the 2021 United Nations and last June won the Grade 1 Manhattan in New York. He’s set to make his first start since an off-form sixth-place finish last August in the Sword Dancer at Saratoga.

Missed the Boat returns to action

Missed the Boat will make his 2023 debut while attempting to regain his strong 2022 form against five others in Saturday’s allowance co-feature at Emerald Downs.

The 7-year-old, owned by Sauvageau Equestrian LLC and trained by Candi Cryderman, was among the sharper runners on the grounds last year after having been claimed early in the season for a $10,000 tag.

The son of Midshipman officially compiled a record of two wins, two seconds, and one third from six Emerald Downs starts in 2022; he was disqualified from first and placed fifth in the other race.
