Big Data wins the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs by three-quarters of a length.

Big Data has returned to his South Florida base of Palm Meadows after winning his stakes debut in the $200,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Saturday. His next road trip could come later this month, trainer Michael Lerman said.

Big Data is being considered for a couple of different races the weekend of Sept. 23-24. He earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 91 in the Super Derby.

“He didn’t seem to be too stressed by the trip,” Lerman said Monday. “I have a feeling I’m going to be sending him back to the track sooner rather than later.”

Study could change discussion of radiographs of sales yearlings

In a selective marketplace where buyers and agents are looking to add perfect yearlings to their racing and breeding programs, radiographs of young horses have been used to narrow prospective targets.

But can a scan of a still-developing horse accurately predict a horse’s potential as a racehorse?

Five years ago, a leggy bay colt stepped into the ring at the Keeneland September yearling sale. His sire, Into Mischief, was on the rise, but had not yet claimed a general sire title or sired an Eclipse Award champion or classic winner. A May foal, the colt was slated as Hip No. 2616, deep in the second week of the marathon sale, and was purchased for $350,000.

Book 1 and 2 horses to watch at Keeneland September yearling sale

More than 1,000 yearlings are set to be presented to upper-market buyers during the first four days – or two books – of the Keeneland September yearling sale. With stellar pedigrees one factor in being selected into those books, it would be impossible to highlight every sibling to or yearling out of a Grade 1 winner. However, some may have some extra attention due to the commercial results of close family members, potential residual value as breeding stock, or recent updates to the family.

The Keeneland September yearling sale kicks off a nearly two-week run on Sept. 11.

The Keeneland September yearling sale is considered the bellwether for the North American marketplace, offering by far the largest number of yearlings of any domestic sale, at a number of price points. The sale is a globally essential marketplace that reveals how the American Thoroughbred is viewed on the international stage.

This year’s 80th edition of the sale has cataloged 4,198 yearlings in 12 sessions, as of Aug. 28. Last year’s sale came in with a similar catalog, with 4,147 yearlings cataloged to a sale that eventually finished with a record gross, average, and median.
