Mr. Papagiorgio should have it his way up front cutting back on dry track

Barbara D. Livingston
Wynstock finished second ahead of Mr. Papagiorgio last time they met and now the two will meet again Friday at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Mr. Papagiorgio could be the controlling speed when he cuts back to a one-turn mile in Friday’s second-level allowance/optional $75,000 claiming feature on Aqueduct’s nine-race card.

On June 20, the last time he competed at a one-turn mile on a fast track, Mr. Papagiorgio prompted the pace under Joel Rosario, made the lead in midstretch, and held his Rick Dutrow-trained stablemate Houlton at bay to win a starter allowance by three-quarters of a length. Houlton did come back to win his next start.

Goodwood Racecourse
After winning the Fillies' Mile and Moyglare Stud, Precise looms a formidable favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

She was out of contention, and now she’s back in.

The appearance of Precise in the pre-entries for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Oct. 31 gives the one-mile race a clear favorite.

Precise won the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket Racecourse in Britain on Oct. 10 for her second consecutive win in a Group 1 and fourth straight win overall. In the immediate aftermath of the race, trainer Aidan O’Brien said Precise would be rested for a spring campaign.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Gate could again be at capacity, with 2024's top two returning

Barbara D. Livingston
Bentornato is currently the Daily Racing Form’s 5-2 morning-line favorite for the Sprint.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The last time a full field of 14 horses went postward in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint was in 2020, when the ageless Whitmore rallied from near the rear of the field to spring an 18-1 upset at Keeneland. From all indications, the starting gate could be at capacity once again for the 2025 edition of the six-furlong Sprint.

Seventeen horses were pre-entered this week. Fourteen have given the race first preference, including Straight No Chaser and Bentornato, the one-two finishers in last year’s renewal of the event.

Breeders' Cup Distaff: Full field will have to catch Seismic Beauty

Benoit Photo
Seismic Beauty's 110 Beyer Speed Figure winning the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch in summer at Del Mar is the highest of the year by a filly or mare around two turns.

The fastest two-turn filly in North America is the early favorite among 14 fillies and mares pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Fourteen are allowed to start in the Distaff, which will be run Nov. 1 at Del Mar, and they’ll all be chasing the front-runner Seismic Beauty.

Bob Baffert trains Seismic Beauty, whose 110 Beyer Speed Figure winning the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch in summer at Del Mar is the highest of the year by a filly or mare around two turns. That does not make her the automatic winner of the Distaff, but it’s a good start.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf: She Feels Pretty headlines oversubscribed lineup

Barbara D. Livingston
She Feels Pretty (left) won the Group 1 New York Stakes at Saratoga in June and the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine on Aug. 16.

The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 1 is a popular race, attracting 18 pre-entries, the most since the same number were pre-entered in 2020.

The potential lineup is led by the American star She Feels Pretty; Cinderella’s Dream, who was second as the 5-2 favorite in the 2024 BC Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar; and possibly Minnie Hauk, who was second in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris on Oct. 5.
