The first night of the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling sale displayed a growing demand for high-level prospects in the state-bred program, but a potentially less forgiving marketplace for those in the lower tiers.
Carter Sales Co. will put on its annual summer yearling auction Sunday in Oklahoma City, and officials anticipate the sale could be the strongest in the seven-year history of the auction inaugurated in 2009.
The lights have barely dimmed in Fasig-Tipton’s Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., but the sale company is rolling right along. Just four days after playing host to a very strong edition of the Saratoga select yearling sale, Fasig-Tipton will conduct its annual New York-bred yearling sale Saturday and Sunday, with sessions beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern.
A change of venue for Saturday’s Barretts select yearling sale has led to a change of approach to California’s leading yearling sale. Saturday evening’s sale at Del Mar has a catalog of 75 horses, with 68 prospects in the main section of the catalog and another seven listed on an also-eligible list. By comparison, the 2014 October yearling sale in Pomona, Calif., had 260 yearlings, with 163 listed as sold, 68 listed as bought back, and 29 withdrawals.
A colt by Fusaichi Pegasus brought $24,500 to top the Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association yearling auction last Saturday at Arapahoe Park in Aurora, Colo. The sale experienced increases in its average and median prices, according to a release from the CTBA.
A colt by leading California sire Idiot Proof sold for $72,000 at Tuesday’s California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale in Pleasanton., Calif., the leading hip of the one-day sale of yearlings and horses of racing age.
The Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale closed Tuesday evening with consistent improvement over last year’s renewal and another affirmation of Tapit’s status as North America’s top commercial sire.
A colt by late sire Street Cry became the first offering of Tuesday's second and final session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale to reach seven figures, selling for $1.4 million. Signing the ticket was John Ferguson to represent Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum’s international operation, which, fittingly, campaigned Street Cry and stood him throughout his career.
Leading sire Tapit accounted for the top three prices of Monday’s opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale, driving gains in gross and average compared with last year’s first evening.
