The biggest weekend for the Maryland Thoroughbred industry is supposed to fall in mid-May, as historic Pimlico hosts the Preakness Stakes and a slew of other high-profile stakes events just days before the region's future stars are unveiled at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale. But this year, a major day for the Old Line State came early, on the first Friday in May in the Bluegrass State.
Catalog updates for a juvenile sale entry are common when a family member does something notable on the track. Far less common are the horses that generate the key updates themselves. A trio of horses in the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale enter with at least one start already under their belts, giving them a distinct line in their résumés beyond what the rest will show during the under-tack show.
Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic division has been on a tear over the past year and a half. Dortmund, a 2-year-old sale graduate, racked up multiple Grade 1 wins and finished third in last year’s Kentucky Derby. Later that month, the 2015 edition of the Midlantic juvenile sale posted the strongest renewal in its history, with record gross, average, and median sale prices and the most expensive horse ever sold at that auction house.
