Patience turned out to be a virtue with Venetta, who was unraced at 2 but became a stakes winner in just her third career start after rallying off a protracted pace duel to register a 1 1/4-length victory over the odds-on Hot Currency in Wednesday’s $200,000 Bouwerie Stakes at Saratoga.

Jimmy P’s affection for Saratoga was on display in the last strides of Wednesday’s Grade 1 Beverly Steinman Handicap Hurdle. That was not necessarily the case for most of the race at 2 3/8 miles. Jimmy P ($10.06) rallied from third in the final half-mile to catch stretch leader Rocket One in the final strides, winning by a neck in 4:33.24.
A move to leading venues at other states has changed her season. Panova won the first Group 1 race of her career in the $714,800 Australasian Oaks at 1 1/4 miles at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide on April 25 in a 10-1 upset. She will be favored to win another Group 1 in Saturday’s $499,000 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm Racecourse near Brisbane. Trained by Chris Waller, Panova is part of a field of 18.
