Distorted Humor, a sire who helped build WinStar Farm into one of Kentucky’s elite stallion operations and breeders, was euthanized on Jan. 10 due to the infirmities of old age. The stallion, who continued to reside at WinStar as a pensioner following his long career, was 33. His legacy will live on, not only with a handful of active runners and some solid sons at stud, but as a phenomenal broodmare sire.

Paul McGee, who trains Lotsandlotsofcandy for Jay Em Ess Stable, harbored interest in seeing what the filly could do in her turf debut Saturday at Fair Grounds in the Nelson Menard Memorial. But casting an eye toward a rainy New Orleans forecast, McGee also said last week he wouldn’t at all feel bad if the Menard was rained off grass and onto dirt. It did, and while Lotsandlotsofcandy’s first start on grass will have to wait, the lightly raced 5-year-old became a stakes winner after taking the Menard by 4 1/2 lengths.

As was the case a year ago, Lightning Tones rallied from last to successfully defend his title in the $75,000 Sunshine Classic, readily running down the 2024 winner Lure Him In to register a decisive 3 1/4-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile race for older Florida-breds Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

So Happy was the 38-1 surprise winner of a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 22. So Happy’s win in race No. 2 of his career - Saturday’s Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs at Santa Anita - was easier to predict, and left Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith eager to see what the colt can do at longer distances.
