Grade 3 winner Can the Man has been retired from racing and will stand the 2015 breeding season at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $5,000.

Trainer-driver Shaun Vallee was not much of a fan of the ABC racing conditions at the Meadowlands. The trainer has raced much of his stock at Yonkers this winter, but on Saturday night his stable will be a force at the Meadowlands. Vallee has five horses in the line-up for the 13-race program and he’s excited about his chances.

The mixed portion of the North American auction calendar has seen the market level out, which, given the rapid ascension out of the cellar from 2008-10, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale will be the final measure of the broodmare and short-yearling markets on a national level before the sales move on to the 2-year-olds in training season. Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning said he expects a solid renewal.
