Churchill: Asmussen loaded for Debutante

Asmussen sends out three favorites in Debutante

Trainer Steve Asmussen was the dominant trainer in the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs in the early to mid-2000s, winning the race in 2001 with Cashier’s Dream and recording three straight victories with Effectual (2005), Richwoman (2006), and Rated Fiesty (2007). On Saturday, he has a strong chance to resume his winning ways in the $100,000, six-furlong stakes for 2-year-old fillies when he starts the three morning-line favorites in the eight-horse race: Adhara (2-1), Areolite (5-2), and Thievery (9-2).

Trainer Bill Kaplan will have a decision to make between now and next Wednesday, when entries are taken and drawn for the rich Summit of Speed card to be run on July 5: whether to keep his promising 3-year-old filly Naval Command against her own kind in the Grade 3 Azalea, or try her with older horses in the richer, more prestigious Win and You’re In Breeders’ Cup race, the Grade 2 Princess Rooney.

Surviving Legend leads Sires’ Cup Futurity field

Surviving Legend might be tough to contain Saturday night in the $100,000 Sires’ Cup Quarter Horse Futurity at Retama Park if he runs back to his trial effort from June 12. Surviving Legend led from start to finish for a 2 1/2-length win in a performance that should make him the favorite in the richest of two significant stakes on the card.
