Surviving Legend leads Sires’ Cup Futurity field
Surviving Legend might be tough to contain Saturday night in the $100,000 Sires’ Cup Quarter Horse Futurity at Retama Park if he runs back to his trial effort from June 12. Surviving Legend led from start to finish for a 2 1/2-length win in a performance that should make him the favorite in the richest of two significant stakes on the card.
Retama also puts on the $50,000 Sires’ Cup Derby for 3-year-old Quarter Horses. The field is led by Jess Toast Winner, who a year ago this week won the Texas Quarter Horse Association Sire Futurity at Retama. Since then, he has won three trial races, including his June 13 qualifier for the Sires’ Cup Derby.
The Sires’ Cup Futurity drew 10, with the gate split between five colts and five fillies. The horses will travel 350 yards, the same distance as the trials earlier this month at Retama.
