Northfield: Looney-King enjoying the ride with Wakizashi Hanover

Wakizashi Hanover, who in June won Canada’s million-dollar North America Cup, returns from a nearly month-long layoff Friday in the $405,000 Carl Milstein Memorial for 3-year-old male pacers at Northfield Park in Ohio. Wakizashi Hanover, known around the stable as the more-easily pronounced “Waki,” drew post eight in the eight-horse field and is the 9-2 third choice on the morning line. Regular driver Tim Tetrick is listed to go with the gelding.

Remington: Meet kicks off with purse hike

Purse hike should help Remington continue to draw full fields

Remington Park has established itself as a venue that offers horseplayers full fields, and its reputation should remain intact during the 67-date meet that opens Friday night. The season led by the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby will continue through Dec. 13.

Brown, as usual, fully loaded for rich turf races

Brown, as usual, fully loaded for rich turf races

Chart the typical evolution of a training career, and the plot line will look jagged. For every burst of success, there are periods of struggle, when a stable runs in place or loses ground. But if the arc of Chad Brown’s career training Thoroughbreds ever has pointed anywhere but up, it’s happened in the dead of night and behind closed doors.

Saratoga: Going gets tougher for King Kreesa

Going gets tougher for King Kreesa

King Kreesa did not receive the respect he obviously deserved in his last two starts, and he rewarded his backers with generous odds of 17-1 and 6-1 for his victories in the Grade 3 Poker and Grade 3 Forbidden Apple stakes at Belmont Park. On Saturday, King Kreesa figures to garner a lot more support despite the fact he moves up against even stiffer competition in the one-mile Fourstardave.

Hovdey: Call Prime Engine ‘Northwest Pharoah’

Nobody east of the Sawtooth Range sets their clock by the Emerald Downs Derby, and that’s okay. The $65,000 purse is basically what American Pharoah gets in tip money after a routine gallop. Then a colt like Prime Engine comes along and wins it in a whirl, doing the mile and one-eighth in a very smart 1:47.54 at odds-on.

Gulfstream: Yourdreamsormine may try turf

Yourdreamsormine may try turf in next Sire Series start

Yourdreamsormine could be headed to turf following his 35-1 upset of the inaugural $150,000 Unbridled division of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park last Saturday. He is one of at least four horses trainer Bill Kaplan is pointing for a Sept. 5 program that features eight stakes, with most of the races spotlighting horses bred in Florida.
