The Equine Sales Company of Louisiana has set dates for both its 2-year-olds in training sale and the 3-year-old divisions of a new sales stakes series to be run at neighboring Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La.
Trainer Todd Pletcher is getting ready to head to south Florida for the winter, but he will have plenty of horses to run in upcoming New York stakes. Tommy Macho, 4 1/4-length winner of the Grade 3 Discovery here on Nov. 11, will make his next start in the $100,000 Queens County Stakes here on Dec. 19.
Do the Roar and Officer Griffin will start as leading contenders Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the $110,000 Claiming Crown Canterbury, but that's where their similarities end. Do the Roar has registered all four of his wins over the local turf course, while Officer Griffin has made limited starts on the grass and never has raced in south Florida.
Trainer David Already a force in New York, Jacobson plans to open a Southern California division when he sends about 20 horses to Santa Anita for the winter meet. Among the horses he will be sending is Salutos Amigos, a multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter who is targeting the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 2.
Art Sherman won a $10,000 allowance race at Los Alamitos last Sunday night with a 3-year-old gelding named Well Maybe, a son of Yes It's True owned by Dr. Ed Allred, who also owns Los Alamitos. It was the only bright spot on an otherwise miserable day as a horse trainer.
Unlike some of the other Claiming Crown races Saturday at Gulfstream Park in south Florida, most of the fillies and mares in the $110,000 Glass Slipper made their last starts just across town at Gulfstream West.
