Equine Sales Company auction for 2-year-olds in Louisiana set for May

The Equine Sales Company of Louisiana has set dates for both its 2-year-olds in training sale and the 3-year-old divisions of a new sales stakes series to be run at neighboring Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La.

The auction will be held May 10, with a breeze show set for May 8, the sales company announced Thursday. Last year, the auction was held in April.

“We pushed the date of the sale back a little bit in 2016 to allow more time for buyers and consignors who might also be participating in earlier sales,” Foster Bridewell, sales director for Equine Sales Company, said in a release. “We had a lot of interest in this auction last year with the addition of the Sales Stakes, and we expect that interest to continue to grow this year.”

The auction will be the third 2-year-old in training sale for the Equine Sales Company.

The sales stakes for 3-year-olds are restricted to graduates of any of the three Equine Sales Company auctions held each year, staring with the offerings in 2015. The sales stakes for 3-year-old fillies will be May 6 and the sales stakes for 3-year-old colts and geldings will be May 7. Each race will be run at a two-turn distance that is yet to be determined, according to a spokesman. The purse for each race will be $75,000.
