It was only a five-horse field of maidens in race 1 on Friday, but it revealed a clue to the Santa Anita Oaks on Saturday. Unfortunately for bettors that like Oaks contender Honey Ride, the Friday race did little to reinforce that opinion.
Through a misty rain and a blustery crosswind (tailwind far turn), horses with positional speed dominated nine races on a harrowed main track labeled good. All nine winners were either first, second, or third at the first call.
Under windy conditions and occasional drizzle, the Keeneland meet got underway Friday with an upset in the first when English Council went from Calumet Farm to the Keeneland winner’s circle.
