There are some competitive fields on this California Cup card, which present some opportunities. The trouble is you have to wait a bit – three of the first four races are for maidens and chockfull of first-time starters, so wading in too deep there seems risky business.

I would be surprised if Upstart doesn’t run another solid race and get another solid Beyer in the Holy Bull. On the Beyer Speed Figures, Barbados is definitely the horse to beat in the Hutcheson.
When reviewing any wager, I always think I could have done better. If I make a score, the first question I ask is, “Could I have made more money?” It’s not greed – it’s just me wanting to maximize opportunities (and, okay, perhaps a little bit of greed). There are times I make a bad bet, review it, and say to myself: “What was I thinking?”

Today’s late pick four at Gulfstream looks like a difficult sequence. It’s book-ended by maiden races on the grass featuring several first-time turf runners. Handicappers could make a case for almost all of the horses in those races, and pick four players are betting blind into a last leg that features a debut runner trained by Chad Brown. Ideally, it would be nice to get a gauge on tote action, but that’s not going to happen with this type of wager.
