Partly due to a storm that led to the cancellation of most of the races at Gulfstream Park last Saturday, this Saturday will feature a plethora of interesting stakes races as well as salty allowance and maiden special weight races. There are 12 stakes races, including 10 graded stakes, on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita, and Tampa Bay Downs, many of which will provide large fields and great betting opportunities.

Before Gulfstream halted last Saturday’s card due to torrential rain, I liked the outside horse to beat the inside-drawn favorite in the Grade 2 Swale. With that race reset for Saturday, that’s still my opinion – only the specific outside-based choice has changed in a redrawn race from X Y Jet to Bluegrass Singer.

The Tampa Bay Derby is certainly the best betting race of the stakes for 3-year-olds. Carpe Diem is going to be favored off his excellent 2-year-old season, with a 91 in the Breeders’ Futurity and 93 when second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Love the bloodlines, but the horse has not been out in four months and his Juvenile is not as good as it looks.
The projected different pace scenario is why I like Chitu in Saturday’s San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita.
