Horse/ Best Beyer Trainer Odds and comments by David Aragona
Ecoro Sieg NA-NA Hideyuki Mori 4-1
Trainer: Hideyuki Mori
Last Race: Canna, Nakayama (Jpn), 1st
DA: Japanese colt is 2 for 2 over 6F, but possesses blazing early speed, so cutback to 5F no issue; take him seriously.
Big Mojo NA-NA-NA Mick Appleby 9-2
Trainer: Mick Appleby
Last Race: Flying Childers, Doncaster (GB), 2nd
DA: Same connections as last year's winner Big Evs; 5F specialist was just edged out by Aesterius in the Flying Childers.
Aesterius NA-NA-NA Archie Watson 5-1
Trainer: Archie Watson
Last Race: Flying Childers, Doncaster (GB), 1st
DA: Turned tables on nemesis Big Mojo to take G2 Flying Childers; has won 3 Euro stakes at 5F over straight courses.
Governor Sam 77-75-78 George Weaver 5-1
Trainer: George Weaver
Last Race: Indian Summer, KEE, 1st
DA: Has won four in a row including three stakes; laid down scorching fractions and still held on to win Indian Summer.
Whistlejacket NA-NA-NA Aidan O'Brien 6-1
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Last Race: Middle Park, Newmarket (GB), 2nd
DA: G1 Prix Morny winner was also second in two G1 stakes at 6F; O’Brien colt is class of field if he handles slight turnback.
Ides of March NA-NA Aidan O'Brien 10-1
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Last Race: Round Tower, Curragh (Ire), 1st
DA: Won maiden on third appearance, then easily took down Irish G3 at 6F, but that was over two months ago.
Shareholder NA-NA-NA Karl Burke 10-1
Trainer: Karl Burke
Last Race: Sumbe Prix Morny, Deauville (Fr), 9th
DA: Won G2 Norfolk at Royal Ascot, but then bombed in G1 Prix Morny in August; tough read returning from layoff.
Magnum Force NA-NA-NA Ger Lyons 15-1
Trainer: Ger Lyons
Last Race: Flying Childers, Doncaster (GB), 3rd
DA: Chased home Aesterius and Big Mojo when beaten favorite in G2 Flying Childers; all races over straight courses.
Mentee 73-51-68 Todd Pletcher 15-1
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Last Race: Futurity, BAQ, 1st
DA: First preference is Juvenile Turf; full to Fierceness took to turf in impressive Futurity win against weaker.
Arizona Blaze NA-NA-NA Adrian Murray 20-1
Trainer: Adrian Murray
Last Race: EBF Legacy, Dundalk (Ire), 4th
DA: Experienced Euro invader raced well at 6F over the summer, placing in a G1, but form has plateaued as of late.
Celandine Ed Walker 20-1
Trainer: Ed Walker
Last Race: Cheveley Park, Newmarket (GB), 5th
DA: First preference is Juvenile Fillies Turf; beaten by Big Mojo and Aesterius in lone 5F attempt over the summer.
Out On Bail 76-69-71 Mike Maker 20-1
Trainer: Mike Maker
Last Race: Indian Summer, KEE, 2nd
DA: Has twice chased home the speedy Governor Sam, unable to catch rival even with the right pace setup last time.
Not selected into the field and listed in order of preference by the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel:
Gate to Wire 73-65 Todd Pletcher 30-1
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Last Race: Futurity, KEE, 2nd
DA: Spa debut winner was no match for stablemate Mentee in Futurity; needs to get faster to contend at this level.
Chasing Liberty 70-78-58 Rob Atras 20-1
Trainer: Rob Atras
Last Race: Indian Summer, KEE, 4th
DA: First preference is Juvenile Turf; ran out of real estate when closing belatedly in fast-paced Indian Summer.
Jet Sweep Joe 46-71-77 Paul McEntee 50-1
Trainer: Paul McEntee
Last Race: Indian Summer, KEE, 11th
DA: Couldn’t deal with frenetic early pace in Indian Summer and faded badly; form going in wrong direction.
Mi Bago 73-51 Mark Casse 30-1
Trainer: Mark Casse
Last Race: Algonquin, WO, 1st
DA: Switched to turf for minor stakes win over similarly configured course at Woodbine, but now steps up in class.
Pali Kitten 79-58-56 Doug O’Neill 20-1
Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Last Race: Speakeasy, SA, 1st
DA: Took a big step forward to upset just three rivals in the Speakeasy; waters get much deeper for improving colt.
Smash It 78-91-83 Todd Fincher 20-1
Trainer: Todd Fincher
Last Race: Speakeasy, SA, 2nd
DA: Earned a 91 Beyer in Del Mar maiden score on dirt; not quite as brilliant when beaten in the Speakeasy on turf.
Smoken Wicked 65-81-72 Dallas Stewart 30-1
Trainer: Dallas Stewart
Last Race: Champagne, BAQ, 4th
DA: Dirt specialist clearly has talent, setting a fast pace in the Hopeful before fading to fourth; tries turf for the first time.
Kale’s Angel 72-74-52 Peter Miller 30-1
Trainer: Peter Miller
Last Race: Zuma Beach, SA, 4th
DA: Won going away over course and distance for maiden score; never threatened going longer in Zuma Beach.

The horses that compete in these championship races can claim their berths in multiple ways. The first is by winning a Breeders' Cup Challenge race. The second is through a system that allows horses to earn points based on their performance in major races throughout the year. The third way to be selected is to be chosen by a panel of experts. There are a maximum of 14 horses in each Breeders' Cup race, except the Dirt Mile and Juvenile Turf Sprint, which are limited to 12 starters.
