LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bob Baffert duo of American Pharoah and Dortmund are the favorites atop the fourth and final pool in the 2015 Kentucky Derby Future Wager that closed Sunday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bob Baffert duo of American Pharoah and Dortmund are the favorites atop the fourth and final pool in the 2015 Kentucky Derby Future Wager that closed Sunday.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - While the trainers of Florida Derby one-two finishers Materiality and Upstart said the race was run over a demanding Gulfstream Park surface, both horses appeared to have emerged from the race in good order and will be pointed to the Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs.
American Pharoah, the champion 2-year-old male of 2014, worked five furlongs in 58.60 seconds Sunday at Santa Anita, preparing for the $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 11.
Santa Anita Derby hopefuls Bad Read Sanchez and One Lucky Dane had workouts at Santa Anita on Sunday.
The $1 million Santa Anita Derby has a probable field of six, and Bad Read Sanchez and One Lucky Dane are considered outsiders compared with Dortmund and Prospect Park, the first two finishers of the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 7. Dortmund is unbeaten in five starts, while Prospect Park made his stakes debut in the San Felipe.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Materiality showed the courage and heart of a veteran in only his third career start, withstanding a thrilling stretch-long challenge from the more experienced even-money favorite, Upstart, to register a well-deserved and impressive 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
NEW ORLEANS – If there is one thing Ken Ramsey lives for, one thing that drives him more than anything, it’s his desire to stand in the winner’s circle on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs following the day’s featured race. He’s had several shots at it, never has won, but his quest continues, and was at the forefront of his mind after International Star won the Grade 2, $750,000 Louisiana Derby on Saturday at Fair Grounds.
Dortmund and Prospect Park had their final workouts Saturday for the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 4.
Dortmund, considered a top prospect for the Triple Crown, worked six furlongs in 1:11.60. Earlier in the morning, Prospect Park worked five furlongs in 1:01.20.
Dortmund, trained by Bob Baffert, worked in company with a stablemate, who took an early lead.
“I sent a horse out there in front of him as a target,” Baffert said.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Mubtaahij cruised to an eight-length victory in the $2 million UAE Derby and ran his way into a start in the Kentucky Derby.
A Kentucky Derby start would be a first for South African trainer Mike de Kock, who has long wintered in Dubai, but this was hardly de Kock’s first taste of success in the UAE Derby. He won the race for the sixth time, though Mubtaahij’s performance was the best from a de Kock horse since Asiatic Boy won in 2007.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Wild at Heart’s workout at Santa Anita on Friday went a little better than expected.
Officially, the 3-year-old Wild at Heart worked five furlongs in 58 seconds. Trainer Richard Mandella timed her in 1:11 for six furlongs.
“I might have gotten it wrong,” Mandella said.
It does not appear so.
