While 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner TEXAS RED rehabs at Premier Equine Center in Oakdale, Calif., the only changes among the local 3-year-olds are plans by two to ship out (see below).
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Far Right is making his presence known on the road to the Arkansas Derby. He won his second straight stakes in Oaklawn’s series for 3-year-olds on Sunday, when he closed up the rail in the slop for a three-quarter-length win over The Truth Or Else in the Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest. Far Right also came up the rail last month at Oaklawn to capture the $150,000 Smarty Jones.
“I was hoping [the rail] was opening up,” said winning rider Mike Smith. “We ducked down to the fence. It didn’t seem like the place to be today, but he made it look good.”
Lord Nelson, winner of the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs on Feb. 1, worked six furlongs in 1:13.40 on Sunday for an expected appearance in the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 7.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Lord Nelson’s time was the sixth-fastest of 13 recorded times at the distance.
The San Felipe is a Grade 2 race at 1 1/16 miles and is a prep for the $1 million Santa Anita Derby at 1 1/8 miles on April 4.
Firing Line, second to Dortmund in the Los Alamitos Futurity in December and the Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 7, is being pointed for the $800,000 Sunland Park Derby in New Mexico on March 22, trainer Simon Callaghan said.
Callaghan said on Sunday that Firing Line could run in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 4, but that the timing of the Sunland Park Derby at 1 1/8 miles has greater appeal as a prep for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 2.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - He has yet to run in a stakes race or earn any qualifying points but Khozan continues to give every impression he’s a legitimate Kentucky Derby candidate after drawing off to a convincing 12 3/4-length victory over five totally overmatched allowance rivals in Sunday’s fifth race at Gulfstream Park.

Where’s The Moon put himself in the picture for next month’s Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Park Derby with his Saturday win in the track’s $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby. Where’s The Moon won 2 1/2 lengths over 1-5 favorite Cinco Charlie, while it was another nose back in third to Dirt Monster.
The Mine That Bird Derby was the final local stepping-stone to the Sunland Derby, which will be run on March 22. Where’s The Moon is a candidate for the 1 1/8-mile race, which is the richest Thoroughbred offering in New Mexico.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Todd Pletcher called it “a jump ball.” And he won. Rick Violette Jr. was less hospitable. “That’s a terrible call,” he said.
Both trainers were reacting on the track to a decision announced just seconds before by track announcer Larry Collmus, that stewards had disqualified the Violette-trained Upstart for interference, placing Pletcher’s Itsaknockout first, after an extremely odd running of the Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
Even before the 2014 Breeders’ Cup, racing fans recognized that Chad Brown is a fast-rising star in the Thoroughbred business, one with a magic touch handling grass runners. But it was at Santa Anita last fall that Brown certified that he is in the top echelon of his profession. He did something that only three other trainers have ever accomplished, winning three races in a single Breeders’ Cup. Those victories – all on grass – helped boost his horses’ year-end purse winnings to $15.3 million, second-best in the nation behind Todd Pletcher’s all-powerful stable.
