Kentucky Derby: Who's hot, who's not for March 12, 2025

Tom Keyser
Owen Almighty makes his first appearance on the Derby Watch Top 20 off his victory in the Tampa Bay Derby.

WHO’S HOT

The plan for Owen Almighty to target the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on May 3 at Churchill Downs still makes sense, but that plan may have changed after his slow-pace front-running win March 8 in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby. Despite trainer Brian Lynch’s reservations about Owen Almighty getting 1 1/4 miles, the colt’s owners are keen for the Kentucky Derby. Owen Almighty, whose 65 qualifying points ensures a Derby berth, is new to Derby Watch. Daily Racing Form linemaker David Aragona opens him at 40-1.

Kentucky Derby 2025: This year, Cox has the numbers but not the power

Barbara D. Livingston
Brad Cox became a Kentucky Derby winner when Mandaloun was moved up to first upon the post-race disqualification of Medina Spirit in 2021.

Brad Cox won a Kentucky Derby the first time he ran a horse in the race.

Granted, Mandaloun’s Derby victory in 2021 did not prove especially satisfying.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Journalism a heavy favorite on morning line for fifth pool

Journalism wins the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, earning a 108 Beyer Speed Figure.

Journalism, the highly rated winner of the San Felipe Stakes on March 1 at Santa Anita in his first start of 2025, has been tabbed as the 3-1 morning-line favorite for this weekend’s Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool, the fifth to be offered prior to this year’s Derby.

Journalism beat odds-on favorite Barnes in the San Felipe by 1 3/4 lengths and earned a 108 Beyer Speed Figure, tops of the year for a 3-year-old. Trained by Michael McCarthy, Journalism is being pointed to the Santa Anita Derby on April 5 as his next start prior to the Kentucky Derby.

Getaway Car has ties to Virginia's last Kentucky Derby winner

Coady Media
Virginia Derby favorite Getaway Car and Virginia-bred Kentucky Derby champ Sea Hero share a family tree.

Despite Virginia’s long equestrian history, parimutuel racing in the state has a relatively short footprint. That hasn’t stopped many prominent breeders from putting down roots in Virginia and supporting the growth of its Thoroughbred industry.

Coal Battle breezes for Briley

Coady Media
Rebel winner Coal Battle worked a half-mile in 49.40 seconds Wednesday.

Rebel winner Coal Battle emerged from a Wednesday breeze in good order and was scheduled to return to the track Saturday, said trainer Lonnie Briley. The horse went a half-mile in 49.40 seconds.

“He worked that real easy half and he was smiling about it,” Briley said. “He’s doing good, feeling great.”

Briley said he is still determining whether Coal Battle will run back in the Arkansas Derby or await the Kentucky Derby.

For Owen Almighty, Tampa Derby the road to Pat Day Mile

Coady Media
Patch Adams disappointed at 4-5 in the Southwest in his last. Trainer Brad Cox said he was “acting weird” after the race.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – While some may be hoping to use Saturday’s Grade 3, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby as a stepping-stone to the May 3 Kentucky Derby, trainer Brian Lynch is using the 1 1/16-mile race to get Owen Almighty to a different event at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.

Lynch feels the Tampa Bay Derby is a good prep to get Owen Almighty to the Pat Day Mile, a one-turn-mile race at Churchill on the Kentucky Derby undercard. The Tampa Bay Derby gives him eight weeks to the Pat Day Mile whereas a race like the Lafayette at Keeneland on April 4 would give him only four.

Kentucky Derby 2025: After Risen Star dud, East Avenue a forgotten horse

Susie Raisher
East Avenue (farthest right) stumbled out of the gate in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, losing all chance. He had no excuse, however, for his poor effort in the Risen Star, his first 2025 start.

East Avenue came into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile the first weekend in November looking like the leading member of his generation. Coming into the second weekend of March, his generation less than two months away from their turn at the Kentucky Derby, East Avenue essentially has fallen off the radar.

Kentucky Derby 2025: Prat will be on the move over the next month

Barbara D. Livingston
Flavien Prat will riding Kentucky Derby preps at Tampa Bay Downs, Colonial Downs, Fair Grounds, and Oaklawn over the next month.

There are no quiet weekends for the remainder of March for Flavien Prat, the champion jockey of 2024.

After riding at Santa Anita last Saturday, Prat will be on planes each weekend for the rest of the month. This Saturday in the Tampa Bay Derby, he is scheduled to ride Chancer McPatrick, who won the Grade 1 Hopeful and Grade 1 Champagne Stakes last year before finishing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar on Nov. 1 in his last start.

Kentucky Derby 2025: Gaming pointed to Virginia Derby

Debra A. Roma
Gaming, who goes next in the Virginia Derby on March 15, comes off a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes, his 3-year-old debut.

Gaming, who finished eighth in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn in his 3-year-old debut, will make his next start in the $500,000 Virginia Derby on March 15 at Colonial Downs, trainer Bob Baffert said.

“It’s a mile and an eighth, one turn, we’ll give him one more crack at it,” said Baffert, who has Irad Ortiz Jr. to ride. “The Oaklawn race was horrendous. He didn’t get anything out of that. He’s come back and worked well.”

Kentucky Derby 2025: Wilkes plowing ahead with Burnham Square

Barbara D. Livingston
Burnham Square appeared to be going out the back door in the Fountain Youth, but finished fourth, beaten just three lengths.

Disappointed, but not discouraged, trainer Ian Wilkes said Burnham Square, fourth as the favorite in Saturday’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, will continue down the Triple Crown trail and be pointed to the Grade 1, $1.25 million Blue Grass at Keeneland on April 5.

“It’s back home,” Wilkes said “He’s run three times [in Florida]. We’ll get back to Kentucky and just plan on the Blue Grass and see if we can rebound.”
