Baffert trio looks to give trainer seventh straight Lewis win

Debra A. Roma
Eclipse Award winner Citizen Bull will be no walkover in his 3-year-old debut on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – It’s always exciting when a champion 2-year-old returns for his first start at age 3, but Eclipse Award winner Citizen Bull is no walkover Saturday at Santa Anita.

There is one virtual certainty, however: Trainer Bob Baffert is likely to score his seventh straight victory in the one-mile, Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis. It helps to have the best horses, as well as the most horses, and Baffert starts three: Citizen Bull, maiden route winner Rodriguez, and maiden sprint winner Madaket Road.

Treaty of Rome likely to Sam Davis

Barbara D. Livingston
Chad Brown has liked what he’s seen from Treaty of Rome since a second-place finish in the Mucho Macho Man.

Treaty of Rome, beaten a neck by Guns Loaded in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan. 4, was not entered for Saturday’s Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream. Instead, he will be pointed to the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa on Feb. 8, trainer Chad Brown said Sunday.

Though Brown also mentioned the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds on Feb. 15 as a possibility for Treaty of Rome, he said he is leaning toward the Sam Davis.

Built favored in full Lecomte as Derby chase intensifies

Coady Media
Built stands a strong chance of tacking 20 more Kentucky Derby qualifying points onto the 10 he earned winning the Gun Runner.

The Fair Grounds starting gate can accommodate 14 runners, and 14 3-year-olds are entered in Saturday’s Grade 3, $250,000 Lecomte Stakes, the first race in the second tier of qualifying races that comprise Churchill Downs’s Road to the Kentucky Derby.

There’s not always strength in numbers, however, and Built, the 3-1 Lecomte morning-line favorite, stands a strong chance of tacking 20 more Kentucky Derby qualifying points onto the 10 he earned winning the Gun Runner last month.

Guns Loaded wins a maiden race at Churchill Downs, earning an 88 Beyer Speed Figure.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – If Saturday’s $165,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes is any indication, it’s going to be fun tracking the locally based 3-year-olds as they make their way along the Kentucky Derby trail between now and the marquee race for the division, the $1 million Florida Derby, here March 29. The Mucho Macho Man is the first of two stakes for 3-year-olds on a card that also features the $165,000 Ginger Brew for fillies at a mile on turf.

Baffert, McCarthy well stocked for California road to Kentucky Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Citizen Bull is working regularly at Santa Anita for Bob Baffert.

ARCADIA, Calif. – From the first Saturday of each winter month at Santa Anita to the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, the search is on to find a 3-year-old with the right stuff.

For those still light on seasoning, such as Barnes and Bullard, the 2025 trail begins Saturday in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes. Others are more established and on standby, including Breeders’ Cup Juvenile one-two Citizen Bull and Gaming, and Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity winner Journalism.

January is still early, and a lot will change.

Barnes top individual horse in second pool of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Coady Media
Barnes was made 13-1 off his debut victory at Churchill on Nov. 27.

Barnes, a first-out winner from the barn of Triple Crown titan Bob Baffert, was made the 13-1 individual favorite in the second Kentucky Derby pool, behind the perennial top choice in the early pools, the field entry, which closed at 9-5.

Barnes, a $3.2 million 2-year-old purchase, won his debut at Churchill Downs on Nov. 27 by a head. It was the first win by a Baffert-trained horse at Churchill since he was banned by the track shortly after the 2021 Kentucky Derby. The ban was lifted this summer. Baffert has won the Derby a record six times.

East Avenue, winner of the Breeders' Futurity, is the morning-line favorite among the 38 individual horses listed for the first Derby Future Wager pool.

Churchill Downs will open its first 2025 Kentucky Derby future wager pool this Wednesday with 38 individual 2-year-olds on offer as well as two field bets.

This is the third year that Churchill has offered a Derby future wager leading up to the Breeders’ Cup. The results of the five Breeders’ Cup races restricted to 2-year-olds held on Friday will significantly impact the betting odds for this year’s crop of juveniles, and the Derby future wager will close at 6 p.m. Eastern on Friday, just prior to post time of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
