United could go on to Hollywood Turf Cup

Susie Raisher
United (right), second to Bricks and Mortar in the BC Turf on Saturday, nearly sprung a 51-1 upset.

ARCADIA, Calif. – For a few moments in deep stretch of Saturday’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita, the 4-year-old gelding United looked poised for a massive upset.

United rallied from fourth to take a narrow lead with a furlong remaining, but could not hold off the late kick of Bricks and Mortar, the leading candidate for the title of 2019 Horse of the Year. Bricks and Mortar was the even-money favorite. United was the 51-1 longest shot in a field of 12.

Brown right back at it following another big Breeders' Cup

Susie Raisher
Trainer Chad Brown kisses Bricks and Mortar following the horse's win Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Chad Brown’s reward for winning three Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita was a red-eye flight to New York where he trained horses at Belmont Park Sunday morning and made the eight-mile drive to Aqueduct to saddle Autonomous, a 2-year-old filly, in the opener. Naturally, Autonomous won.

On the drive, Brown, sounding a little sick, reflected on his sensational Breeders’ Cup success where he won three races from eight runners and may very well have left California with a bona fide Horse of the Year.

For Irad Ortiz Jr., focus on Breeders' Cup pays off handsomely

Barbara D. Livingston
Irad Ortiz Jr. rode four Breeder's Cup winners in 2019, including Vino Rosso in the Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Though he was near the top of the national leaderboard in both wins and purse money won for the year, jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. – the reigning Eclipse Award winning jockey – felt his business had slowed down this fall.

At the Belmont Park fall meet – one that he led all riders in wins for five consecutive years – Ortiz won just 20 races, ninth in the standings. While his upper tier business was solid, his day-to-day business was not.
