Total wagering on the 14 Breeders’ Cup races held on Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., set a record for the fourth year in a row, increasing nearly 12 percent over the total amount bet last year on a 14-race card at Churchill Downs in Louisville, according to charts of the races.

Bolo a late scratch from Breeders' Cup Mile

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bolo was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Mile about 10:30 a.m. Pacific on Saturday morning because of an illness, trainer Carla Gaines said.

Gaines, via text message, said bloodwork done on Bolo indicated the horse had some sort of infection. Gaines said Bolo “had mucus and coughing” and that the decision to scratch was difficult but that Bolo’s camp was “doing what is best for the horse.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – Four Wheel Drive, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Friday at Santa Anita, will be pointed to the Group 1 Commonwealth at Royal Ascot in June, trainer Wesley Ward said early Saturday.

Four Wheel Drive already was back in his stall at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., after an overnight flight.

“He and the two fillies are all back home,” said Ward, referring to Kimari, who was fourth, and Cambria, who was ninth. “They left on an airplane at 1 a.m.”

Suedois scratched from Breeders' Cup Mile with foot infection

ARCADIA, Calif. – Suedois was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Saturday morning because of a foot problem. Trainer David O’Meara said Suedois had developed a minor infection in his hoof that would prevent him from competing.

“There’s nothing much to it at all,” O’Meara said. “If the race had been tomorrow, he’d have been fine. It was just a question of timing.”

Foot issue forces Imperial Hint out of Breeders' Cup Sprint

ARCADIA, Calif. - Imperial Hint will be scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, trainer Luis Carvajal Jr. said Saturday morning.

Carvajal said Imperial Hint developed a blister on his coronet band, at the top of his hoof, that was sensitive to the touch when examined by state veterinarians.

 “The horse has been training well,” said Carvajal. “When the vets watched him on the track he looked good, but the area is sensitive to the touch.”

Longshot Friday winners lead to $489,379 Breeders' Cup pick six carryover

ARCADIA, Calif. – Three longshot winners in Friday’s pick six sequence, capped by Storm the Court’s 45-1 upset in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, produced a $489,379 carryover into Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup card at Santa Anita.

No one picked six in a sequence spanning races that included victories by Tap Black at $30 in race 4, Four Wheel Drive at $5, Structor at $12.60, British Idiom at $7.40, Sharing at $29.60, and Storm the Court at $93.80. Five winners paid $2,878.70 on a $1 ticket, the bet’s base amount.

Breeders' Cup wagering gets off to record start on 2019 Friday card

Wagering on the five Breeders’ Cup races held on Friday at Santa Anita Park in Southern California set a record for the Friday slate and was up 9.4 percent over handle on the same five races last year, according to charts of the races.

Total wagering on the five races, including all horizontal bets ending in Breeders’ Cup races held on the 10-race card, was $41.71 million, according to the charts, up from $38.14 million on the five Breeders’ Cup races held last year at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
