Carlos Martin returns to California with a leading Breeders' Cup contender of his own, Come Dancing

Barbara D. Livingston
Come Dancing has had a remarkable season for trainer Carlos Martin. They are shown above at Saratoga.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Carlos Martin believes the last time he was in California was in 1987 when his father, the trainer Jose Martin, ran Groovy in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Hollywood Park. Only 18 years old at the time, Carlos Martin took Groovy’s fourth-place finish as the 2-5 favorite in the Sprint hard.

“I think I stayed in the hotel room for about three days,” Martin said. “It was just sad the horse got beat. He was such a great horse.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – Dispute if you want the “Championships” part of “Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships,” but there’s undeniable truth in the “World” part of it.

There are 19 overseas horses, hailing from Korea, Japan, Ireland, England, and France, entered to compete in Saturday Breeders’ Cup races. The overseas invaders have legitimate chances in all the day’s turf races save the Turf Sprint, so let’s have a look at them race by race.

Barbara D. Livingston
Shoplifted blows out three furlongs in 38.53 seconds Wednesday for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

ARCADIA, Calif. – There was a definite chill in the air Wednesday morning at Santa Anita, where the temperature struggled to get out of the 40s for much of the morning. But the unseasonably cold weather was tempered some by all the action heating up on the racetrack, with the majority of this year’s Breeders’ Cup contingent out to train over all three surfaces, including the turf course, which saw its first major flurry of activity Wednesday morning.

A Breeders' Cup win would give Joseph O'Brien another record

Emily Shields
Joseph O'Brien is the youngest jockey to win a Breeders' Cup race. A win this weekend as a trainer would make him the youngest in that category also.

ARCADIA, California – Given his pedigree, it should come as no surprise that Joseph O’Brien this week at Santa Anita has a chance to go where no Breeders’ Cup horse person ever has gone before.

O’Brien already is the youngest jockey with a Breeders’ Cup winner, having piloted St Nicholas Abbey to victory in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Turf. Friday or Saturday, O’Brien, now 26, could become the youngest trainer with a Breeders’ Cup winner. Craig Dollase was 26 when he won the BC Sprint with Reraise.
