Filly beats colts

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Mark Hennig shipped the filly Hemline to Monmouth Park for the opening-day feature, the Politely Stakes, only to settle for second place. In the $100,000 Jersey Derby, however, Hennig made his day at the shore a successful one, as his 3-year-old filly Mystic Lady ($5) raced wire-to-wire for a neck victory over Sir Brian's Sword.

The Jersey Derby was slated for the grass as a Grade 3 but was moved to the main track along with the day's other grass races.

Affirmed Success sharp

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Richard Schosberg got his wish when the $100,000 Jaipur Handicap was moved from the turf to the main track, and Affirmed Success got his season off to a winning start by wearing down Texas Glitter to take the seven-furlong race by one length.

It was 16 3/4 lengths back to Bought in Dixie, the only other horse to run after seven horses scratched when the race was moved to a muddy main track after weeklong rains made the turf course too soft to use.

It's 'Michigan'

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Beatmichiganagain scored a hard- earned half-length victory over Lady Cherie in the $40,000, six-furlong Brent's Princess Stakes at Thistledown.

The early pacesetter, Mandy G, weakened to finish third, 6 1/4 lengths farther back in the field of eight Ohio-breds.

Beatmichiganagain ($4.40) prompted Mandy G into the stretch, went up to make the lead and opened a clear advantage, then was all out under strong urging by William Troilo to hold off the charging Lady Cherie.

'Thistyrant' rules Reilly

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Thistyranthasclass returned to state-bred company and romped to a 2 3/4-length win in the $50,000 John J. Reilly Handicap on opening day at Monmouth Park.

Thistyranthasclass, the 8-5 favorite, completed the six-furlong race in 1:08.77 over a fast track. He returned $5.40.

Ridden by C.H. Marquez for trainer John Tammaro III, the 4-year-old Thistyranthasclass improved his record to 5-0-2 in 11 lifetime starts. All five of his wins have come at Monmouth.

Governor's Pride ties record

BALTIMORE - Governor's Pride didn't care much that the $50,000 C. Edmund O'Brien Stakes was taken off the saturated turf course and run on the sloppy dirt as he tore around Pimlico today and tied the five-furlong track record.

With eight of the 11 entrants in the race scratched, the front-running Governor's Pride had Dr. Max and Rudirudy at his mercy. Governor's Pride kicked mud in their faces from the start, zipping a quarter-mile in 22.14 seconds and finishing six lengths in front in 56.96 seconds.

Pine Dance prevails

Pine Dance, winless in six starts since last fall, splashed to a three-quarter length victory in the $75,000 Brandywine Stakes at Delaware Park.

Ridden for the first time by Ramon Dominguez, the 4-year-old Pine Dance ($9) ran the mile over a sloppy track in 1:37.22. It was his first race over a wet surface since he captured the Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park last September.

Quick Punch finished second, 1 1/4 lengths ahead of the 8-5 favorite, Liberty Gold.

Six horses scratched because of the rainy conditions, reducing the field to seven.

Red Sea, Del Mar Show win

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Red Sea and Del Mar Show won the two divisions of Saturday's Grade 3 Connaught Cup Stakes, a pair of

1 1/16-mile turf races contested over yielding ground at Woodbine.

Red Sea ($7.10) tracked a moderate pace set by Academic and Medievil Hero in the first division, which was worth $165,150. Red Sea was stuck in traffic throughout the first half of the stretch run, but jockey Emile Ramsammy found room inside the eighth pole and got him home on top by a half-length over River Boat.

Hidden Assets flops

STICKNEY, Ill. - Come September ($39.80), ridden to victory by Alfredo Juarez Jr., stalked the early pace set by Capitol View and outgamed her in the stretch to win the $57,550 Regal Rumor Stakes at Hawthorne by three-quarters of length. The late-running Faccia Bella closed to be third.

Trained by Joe McKellar, Come September ran six furlongs on a sloppy track in 1:12.01.

Flom's Prospector rolls

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Flom's Prospector, coming off a win in a $40,000 claiming race, ran the heavily favored El Dorado Shooter into submission, then drew off to a stunning 7 1/2-length victory in the $61,300 Saratoga Handicap at six furlongs at Bay Meadows.
