Hal's Hope uses soft pace

MIAMI, Fla. - Hal's Hope, benefiting from a surprisingly pedestrian pace, drew off to a 4 1/4-length victory over American Halo the $75,000 Memorial Day Handicap.

Breaking from post position one, Hal's Hope moved through inside Forty One Carats to assume command on the clubhouse turn from where he set fractions of 24.39 seconds and 49.65 while taken well off the rail in the run down the backstretch. The 2000 Florida Derby winner, Hal's Hope disposed of his early pursuer after completing six furlongs in 1:14.60 then drew off readily from American Halo.

Pavillon scores upset

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Joe Bravo displayed his dominance of the Monmouth Park turf in the Grade 3 $150,000 Red Bank Handicap Monday, riding Pavillon to an upset over a soft turf at 20-1 before a crowd of 17,741.

A Marty Wolfson-trained 7-year-old, Pavillon ran the one-mile race in 1:36.20, crossing the wire a neck in front of Western Summer. Pavillon is a three-time Grade 1 winner in Brazil.

He earned $90,000 for Rio Aventura Stables in the Red Bank, and improved his record to 7-6-4 in 28 starts.

Voodoo Dancer flawless

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - For the second time in six months, trainer Christophe Clement has plundered a turf stakes at Hollywood Park.

On Monday, Voodoo Dancer won her second stakes in Monday's $150,000 Flawlessly Stakes at Hollywood Park. Last November, the Clement-trained Charge d'Affaires won the Citation Handicap in the upset.

Voodoo Dancer ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:48.29, finishing 2 1/2 lengths in front of Innit, the 2-1 favorite.

Leelanau soars in Kentucky Cup for aviator-owner

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As the owner of the top equine aviation company in Thoroughbred racing, David Clark knows all about flying horses around the country for stakes engagements.

But when Leelanau, owned by Clark, set a track record Monday in winning the $162,600 Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes at Churchill Downs, all the colt had to do was walk a few hundred yards from his stall in Barn 39 on the Churchill backstretch.

"I might have to start flying this one on my own [expense]," said Clark, owner of the Tex Sutton Co.

Dixie Dot Com does it in track-record time

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Dixie Dot Com became a millionaire when he won the Grade 3 $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap in track-record time Monday at Lone Star Park. The race was the richest of seven stakes worth a cumulative $1 million.

One race after the Lone Star Park Handicap, Hallowed Dreams won her first start outside of Louisiana in the $100,000 Valid Expectations Stakes. Her career record now stands at 22 wins from 23 starts.

Can't count Lukas out of Belmont

D. Wayne Lukas has been absent from this year's Triple Crown so far, but the trainer will be out to win the Belmont Stakes for the second straight year on June 9 at Belmont Park when he runs Buckle Down Ben in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Buckle Down Ben earned his berth in the Belmont by virtue of his fast victory in a one-mile allowance race on Sunday at Churchill Downs. He will be trying to follow in the footsteps of Commendable, whose upset victory in last year's Belmont Stakes was the fourth in the race for Lukas.

Acorn gets even stronger with Real Cozzy

ELMONT, N.Y. - Real Cozzy, runner-up in the Kentucky Oaks, will make her next start in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park on June 8, trainer Dan Peitz confirmed Monday.

Overall, the Acorn is shaping up a terrific race. Other definite starters include Caressing, last year's 2-year-old filly champion; Cat Chat and Victory Ride, a pair of undefeated fillies, and Unbridled Elaine, a winner of three of four starts. Possible runners include Latour, Dark Ending, Irish Fantasy, Starrer, and With Ability.

Hero's Tribute beats E Dubai in Peter Pan

ELMONT, N.Y. - Hero's Tribute, who at one time was considered a stronger Kentucky Derby threat than stablemate Monarchos, restored his lofty reputation Saturday, splashing his way to a 3 3/4-length victory in the $200,000 Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park.

Hero's Tribute dueled most of the way with E Dubai, who gave way in upper stretch and settled for second, 10 1/4 lengths ahead of Dayton Flyer. Sirpa, Meetyouathebrig, Telescam, and I Love Silver completed the order of finish.

History repeats itself

Saluteloot made a strong case for deja vu, winning the $50,000 April Run Stakes at Pimlico under identical conditions as the year before.

A year and a day after the April Run, a 1 1/2-mile race for fillies and mares, was taken off the turf and contested over 1 1/4 miles in the slop, the same thing happened again. Saluteloot ($7.40) nipped Polly Jo by a nose, finishing in 2:06.40.

In between the two victories, the 6-year-old Saluteloot, owned by Phyllis Dixon and trained by Tim Ritchey, had lost nine times.

Alybegood handles mud

STICKNEY, Ill. - Hawthorne's decision to move the Indian Maid Stakes from turf to dirt resulted in seven scratches, but it suited Alybegood. Alybegood, a shipper from Kentucky, stayed in the Indian Maid despite the surface change and took the field gate to wire, winning by three lengths over Adam's Time, the narrow favorite.

The $59,700 Indian Maid was the first career stakes win for Alybegood, owned by Joe Lacombe and trained by Mary Jo Lohmeier her. Apprentice jockey Zoe Cadman, the leading rider here, won the second stakes of her career.
