Two win streaks clash in $250k Jefferson Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Something will have to give Saturday at Churchill Downs when a pair of colts with modest winning streaks clash in a field of 10 3-year-olds in the $250,000 Jefferson Cup.

Kalu, winner of his last three starts for trainer Christophe Clement, and Strategic Partner, who enters off back-to-back wins culminating in the Crown Royal American Turf on the Kentucky Oaks undercard, are the principals in the Grade 3 Jefferson Cup, at 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Anthony Black enjoying his late-career roll

Jockey Anthony Black may be middle-aged, but he can't help feeling like a kid again.

After more than two decades at Philadelphia Park, where he earned five riding titles and won more races than any other jockey, Black has made Delaware Park his home track. At an age when most of his contemporaries are either retired or cutting back on their mounts, Black is still at the top of his game.

Through Tuesday's races, Black has ridden a meet-leading 41 winners at Delaware, five more than five-time track champion Mike McCarthy.

Cheryl P. tries mile in Mesquite

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Cheryl P., who romped by a cumulative 14 3/4 lengths in three consecutive stakes in February and March, will attempt to stretch out to the distance of her last victory, a mile, in the $100,000 Mesquite Breeders' Cup for 3-year-old fillies Saturday at Lone Star Park.

The front-running Cheryl P. won two six-furlong races at Oaklawn Park in February, the $50,000 Martha Washington and the $50,000 Dixie Belle, before cruising by 6 3/4 lengths in the one-mile Houston Oaks at Sam Houston Race Park on March 10.

Thistledown: Rematch

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - The $50,000, 1 1/16-mile Merry Times Stakes has drawn a full field of 12 Ohio-bred fillies and mares and sets up a rematch between Lady Cherie and Beatmichiganagain.

Under the allowance conditions of the race, Lady Cherie will be the starting highwieght under 122 pounds and will be spotting Beatmichiganagain nine pounds. These two finished a half-length apart under equal weight of 116 pounds in the six-furlong Brents Princess Stakes here May 26 with Beatmichiganagain earning the victory.

Lincoln: High Dice back sprinting

LINCOLN, Neb. - High Dice will carry highweight of 123 pounds when he faces four others in the $10,000 President's Cup Handicap at six furlongs Saturday evening.

Trained by Herb Riecken, High Dice is turning back in distance following a solid 4 3/4-length victory in the Big Red Mile here May 28. Before that, High Dice captured the Dowd Mile Handicap at Fonner Park while prepping for the Bosselman/Gus Fonner Handicap. He came up short in the Bosselman, making a bid on the far turn but fading to sixth in the stretch of the $100,000 race.

Asher in line for fourth stakes

ALTOONA, Iowa - Asher will be heavily favored to score her fourth stakes win of the year when she heads a field of seven fillies and mares in the 1 1/16-mile $50,000 Wild Rose Handicap at Prairie Meadows on Saturday night.

Asher scored an easy three-length victory in the Diamond Trail Stakes here at a mile and 70 yards May 19 under jockey Sidney LeJeune in her last start. She also won two stakes at Oaklawn this winter for trainer Ron Moquett. Asher's only two losses this year have come against graded stakes company.
