Juveniles ready for Criterium

MIAMI - Pure Precision, who turned in the most impressive performance of any 2-year-old at the meet, and Tabac, an easy victor of the Hialeah Juvenile, head a list of 16 colts and geldings nominated for next Saturday's $100,000 Criterium Stakes.

Pure Precision won his career debut by nearly 11 lengths with speed to spare for trainer Manny Tortora and George Steinbrenner's Kinsman Stable. Tabac was an impressive three-length winner of the Hialeah Juvenile in just his second career start. Tabac tuned up for the Criterium with a bullet 47.80-second half-mile work on Friday.

David Vance the new trainer of Unbridled Elaine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - David Vance, already training last year's 2-year-old filly champion Caressing, now has another talented 3-year-old filly. On Thursday he became the new trainer of Unbridled Elaine, the fourth-place finisher in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes, after owner Roger Devenport transferred his horses from trainer Dallas Stewart.

Unbridled Elaine, winner of the Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs last fall, is nominated to the July 5 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows and could run in that 1 1/16-mile race if she works well in the interim, Vance said.

McCarron's latest honor: A living doll

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jockey Chris McCarron has won two Kentucky Derbys and more than 7,000 races. His mounts have earned more than $253 million, more than any rider in history. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989 and remains one of the leading riders in Southern California.

None of that quite compares to the honor awaiting him on Sunday, when 20,000 eight-inch bobble-headed dolls with McCarron's likeness are given away to paying customers at Hollywood Park.

"Now I know I've made it," McCarron said earlier this week with a laugh.

Clark integral part of Team Include

ELMONT, N.Y. - He is well removed from his days as a prime-time jockey, but Kerwin Clark is playing a primary role in the development of one of the top handicap horses in the country.

Clark, 42, is the work rider for Include, who brings a five-race race winning streak into Sunday's Grade 2 $500,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. Despite being based in New Orleans, Clark is flown up to Maryland at the expense of trainer Buddy Delp to work Include.

Smok'n Frolic clear favorite

ELMONT, N.Y. - Coming off an authoritative 5 3/4-length victory in the Fashion Stakes, Smok'n Frolic looms a short-priced favorite in Sunday's $100,000 Astoria Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Belmont Park.

Smok'n Frolic, a daughter of Smoke Glacken, stumbled at the start of the Fashion before drawing off powerfully under Jerry Bailey.

Poetically back for Bison City

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Poetically, Canada's champion 2-year-old filly, will be looking to make up for lost time at Fort Erie on Sunday in the $266,250 Bison City Stakes.

A field of five Canadian-bred fillies will contest the 1 1/16-mile Bison City, the second leg of the Canadian triple tiara series, which began with the June 9 Labatt Woodbine Oaks.

Heading into this season, the long-term Woodbine Oaks forecast had called for a clash between Poetically and Dancethruthedawn, who had finished second in last year's Sovereign Award balloting.

Hollywood shipper has top credentials

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Britetonzmyday, a recent maiden winner at Hollywood Park, looks like the one to beat when she meets eight other 2-year-old fillies in Sunday's $40,000 Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes at five furlongs at the Alameda County Fair.

Only one of these fillies has started more than twice, and there is one first-time starter with decent credentials in the field, so just about anything could happen. But there is lots to like about Britetonzmyday, although the price probably won't be much.

Sick as a Parrot no longer a loser

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - European import Sick as a Parrot will be looking to remain unbeaten on this side of the pond when he takes on seven other older runners in Sunday's $166,800 Dominion Day Handicap at Woodbine.

Trainer Michael Dickinson gained worldwide attention during the 1990's by winning the Breeders' Cup Mile twice with the delicate gelding, Da Hoss. He has weaved more of his magic with Sick as a Parrot, who lost 17 consecutive races through the end of 1999 in England, before owner Nigel Shields sent him to Dickinson's Maryland training center.

Makors Mark sitting on big race

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Makors Mark returns to the Hastings Park for the first time since his victory in last year's B.C. Derby and if his win in the Budweiser Emerald Downs Handicap is any indication, he should be tough to deal with in Sunday's Lieutenant Governors.

"He ran game the whole way," said his trainer, David Forster. "He kept shaking horses off and then another one would attack him. He showed a lot of courage."
