Highland Mood can go 3 for 3

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Highland Mood and Turner's Hall are the two marquee horses in Monday's $146,880 Ontario Damsel Stakes, a 6 1/2-furlong turf dash for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.

Highland Mood, trained by Woodbine leader Bob Tiller, is unbeaten in two starts. She was dismissed at 26-1 when she debuted in a six-furlong maiden special May 23, and turned heads when she scored by daylight in 1:11.40, earning a 76 Beyer Figure.

In a six-furlong allowance on turf June 6, Highland Mood stalked the pace for a half-mile before drawing off for a 2 1/2-length triumph.

Better to watch than to wager

Captain Steve will be racing beyond his best distance and is back on short rest, but has only three serious rivals in the Hollywood Gold Cup.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Betting windows will be open Sunday, but who needs one for the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup?

Captain Steve meets three legitimate rivals and one throwout in the $750,000 race that has only four betting interests. Not that it matters to Captain Steve's trainer, Bob Baffert, who said: "These big races, they're not really gambling races, they're 'watch-the-stars-perform' races. The other races are gambling races."

Zito looking ahead to Classic

ELMONT, N.Y. - Sunday's $500,000 Suburban Handicap is as much about the past and future as it is about the here and now.

As one of two regularly scheduled graded dirt stakes run at 1 1/4 miles at Belmont Park, the Suburban takes on added significance this year because Belmont this fall hosts the World Thoroughbred Championships, highlighted by the $5 million Classic run at 1 1/4 miles.

"We're basically practicing for the Breeders' Cup," said Nick Zito, trainer of probable Suburban favorite Albert the Great.

Senure the strong choice in U.N.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Senure, North East Bound, and Honor Glide will meet Sunday in a very evenly matched Grade 1, $500,000 United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park.

With Bienamado at the top of the heap in the West, trainer Bobby Frankel is sending Senure to New Jersey in search of Senure's fourth U.S. win and first Grade 1 tally. A 5-year-old son of Nureyev, Senure finished second to Bienamado in the Charlie Whittingham Handicap at Hollywood Park in his first start of the year.

'Dreams' ready as she'll ever be

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - After five career starts, all on turf, and two wins, Live Your Dreams looks ready to make her stakes debut in Sunday's $250,000 Honeymoon Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park. The Grade 2 Honeymoon, run over 1 1/4 miles on turf, is for 3-year-old fillies.

There are few throwouts in the field of nine, which includes four stakes winners: OK to Dance (120 pounds), Innit (117), Allright Now (117), and Dynamous (115). None of the entrants has been 1 1/4 miles on turf, a new distance for the Honeymoon, and none has run for this much prize money.

Extra furlong may be tough for Go Go

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Since last fall, no horse in California has been as consistent for as long as Go Go, who has won six of seven starts, including four stakes.

Sunday, she will be heavily favored to win her fifth stakes of 2001 in the $200,000 A Gleam Handicap for fillies and mares at Hollywood Park.

But Sunday's race is not an easy assignment for Go Go. She is the 124-pound highweight, spotting five others from seven to 13 pounds and is trying seven furlongs for the first time.

Will Caller One show or not?

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Early in the week, when trainer Jim Chapman was talking up a storm about his good sprinter Caller One, the Grade 2 Triple Bend Handicap on Sunday was shaping up as a terrific seven-furlong race.

Caller One would carry 126 pounds against the good 3-year-old Squirtle Squirt, and Chapman said Tuesday, "Our horse is big enough to carry it. We'll see how hard they want to run. I can't hold him in the barn, he's got to do something.

Lettuce Loose back on familiar ground

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Lettuce Loose, favored in each of her starts before her most recent race, the Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, should once again rule as the public's choice in Sunday's Fantasia Stakes at Louisiana Downs.

The six-furlong Fantasia, for Louisiana-bred 3-year-old fillies, has drawn a solid field of 11 and carries a $40,000-added purse.

Odd spot for prep

After watching Anclote secure her first stakes victory a month ago, trainer Paul Rizzo began thinking about pointing her to the Delaware Oaks, a Grade 3 race on July 21 worth $250,000 run at 1 1/16 miles on dirt.

In contrast to her sharp dirt form, Anclote is winless in two starts on turf and carries a below-average Tomlinson rating of 180, indicating she's probably not well-suited for grass.
