Gutsy La Loche goes for No. 2

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - La Loche, Matter of Law, and Happy to Be Home, all unbeaten in one start apiece, are the only winners in Sunday's $146,745 Shady Well Stakes, a 5 1/2-furlong dash for Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies.

La Loche could be favored off her gutsy effort in a five-furlong maiden special, in which she prevailed by a neck in 1:00.

Super Tuesday ships in to win

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Super Tuesday can change trainer Dean Pederson's Southern California luck in Sunday's $100,000 California Sires Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Pederson, based at Golden Gate Fields in northern California, has made sporadic trips south in recent years, but has had no success.

"I've got my tail kicked a few times," Pederson said.

On Sunday, Super Tuesday could do the kicking.

Playfair needs 300G to continue

AUBURN, Wash. - Lilac City Racing Association will need to secure another $300,000 in financing by July 18 in order to conduct a meeting this year at Playfair Race Course in Spokane, according to the terms of an order released by the Washington Horse Racing Commission late Thursday afternoon.

The $300,000 is in addition to Lilac City's current line of credit of approximately $275,000 and about $147,000 in other funds available to the association.

Can Sumitas sustain Frankel roll?

What can trainer Bobby Frankel do for an encore?

Last weekend Frankel, the second-leading trainer in the country in money won with $4.7 million to Bob Baffert's $10.3 million, captured two Grade 1's via disqualification. The Frankel-trained Senure was put up in the $500,000 United Nations, as was Aptitude in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup. Frankel also finished second with Lido Palace in the $500,000 Suburban.

Prado heating up as Saratoga nears

ELMONT, N.Y. - Edgar Prado's timing couldn't be better. With the Saratoga meet less than three weeks away and with 12 days left in the Belmont spring-summer meet, Prado has gone on a tear.

In the last eight racing days, Prado has ridden 13 winners from 52 mounts to give him 49 victories for the meet. That puts him just three behind John Velazquez for leading rider. Prado, who turned 34 last month, said winning the Belmont title would be very meaningful.

Tiznow 'not quite right'

ARCADIA, Calif. - Tiznow did not gallop to jockey Chris McCarron's satisfaction on Friday, leaving doubts about when the colt can resume serious training.

Since late April, Tiznow, a 4-year-old, has fought back problems that have limited his exercise to jogging and galloping. Trainer Jay Robbins asked McCarron, who has ridden Tiznow to five stakes wins, including the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic, to gallop Tiznow to check the his status.

Shortly after 7 a.m., McCarron jogged Tiznow 1 1/4 miles and then galloped 1 1/8 miles.

Unbridled Elaine romps

ALTOONA, Iowa - Unbridled Elaine drew off to a convincing 8 3/4-length victory over Supreme Song in the $150,000 Iowa Oaks at 1 1/16 miles at Prairie Meadows Thursday night.

Unbridled Elaine ($2.60) settled in fourth position early under patient handling from Pat Day, as the previously undefeated Dancin Emi set the pace through a half mile in 47.06 seconds.

River Downs: 11 turf debuts

All 11 Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies in Sunday's Cincinnatian Stakes at River Downs will be making their turf debut. The Cincinnatian carries a purse of $50,000 and will be contested at 1 1/16 miles.

Despite the absence of any turf form, handicapping the Cincinnatian is made easier by the fact that six of the entrants are still maidens, and only a couple of those have an outside chance for a minor placing.

LINCOLN, Neb. - Nine races for Nebraska-breds, including four stakes, highlight Nebraska Breeders' Championship Day here Sunday. Unfortunately, only 44 horses were entered for the card. The largest field contains six horses and the smallest has three.

Canterbury Park: Two-horse Myers

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - The top Minnesota-bred 3-year-olds will get their first serious test of the season in a pair of $40,000 stakes Sunday, the Victor S. Myers Jr. for colts and geldings and the Frances Genter Stakes for fillies. Both races are at six furlongs.

Seven colts and geldings line up in the Victor Myers, but the race has the makings of a two-horse duel between Now Playing and Balin.
