Cashier's Dream rings up Debutante

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Cashier's Dream remained unbeaten in three starts, romping to a track-record victory Saturday in the 101st running of the $110,500 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Cashier's Dream, a Michigan-bred making her first start for new connections, led all the way in the 5 1/2-furlong Debutante to score a 3 1/2-length triumph over Lakeside Cup. Ridden by Donnie Meche, the winner returned $6.60 and ran the distance in 1:02.52 over a fast track. The previous record was 1:03.11, set May 28 by Leelanau.

Juggernaut upsets Criterium

MIAMI - Juggernaut lost his career debut under a $32,000 claiming tag but became a stakes winner two starts later when he unleashed a powerful closing rally that easily carried him to a two-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 Criterium Stakes at Calder.

Smile Again wins by a neck

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Smile Again set a quick pace and held off a late rally from Freedom Crest to win Saturday's $100,000 Bel Air Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr., Smile Again ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.74, winning by a neck over Freedom Crest, who was making his first start since finishing last in the San Antonio Handicap in February. Dig for It finished third in the field of six.

Bright Valour repeats feat

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Bright Valour needed a post-race disqualification to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Hanshin Handicap last year at Arlington Park.

This year, all it took was a perfect inside trip under Robby Albarado and a game run through the stretch for Bright Valour to win his second straight Hanshin.

Silver Tornado passes test

OCEANPORT, N.J. - It was a day of firsts for the lightly raced Silver Tornado at Monmouth on Saturday. First time on the turf. First time going two turns. First time in a stakes.

And Silver Tornado was up to all challenges as she raced gate to wire to win the $100,000 Reeve Schley Jr. Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Owned by Harry Quadracci and trained by Linda Rice, Silver Tornado remains undefeated, with four career wins, the first three of which came on the dirt.

Woodbine: Alexis surprises

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Longshot Alexis burst out of the pack in the stretch to take the Grade 3 $171,300 Dance Smartly Handicap by three-quarters of a length over American invader Badouizm at Woodbine.

Irish-bred Alexis returned $25.30 while winning her second North American stakes for owner Morgan Firestone. Trained by Cliff Hopmans Jr., she earned $102,780 for winning the 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares.

Thistledown: Harlan's Holiday romps

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Harlan's Holiday assumed command before traveling a half-mile and went on to post a 5 1/4-length victory over nine 2-year-old Ohio-bred rivals in the $40,000 Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes at Thistledown.

Truth Matters finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of All Star Lover.

Harlan's Holiday, owned by Starlight Stable, won a maiden race in his second career start after finishing second in his debut at Churchill Downs.

Pompeii sharp in return from rest

A three-month layoff did little to diminish Pompeii's good form.

Racing for the first time since March 31, the 4-year-old Pompeii sat off the pace of the early leaders and then closed willingly to score a length victory in Saturday's $50,000 Doylestown Handicap at Philadelphia Park.

Ridden by Roberto Alvarado, Pompeii ($4) covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.43 while winning for the seventh time in 14 career starts for trainer John Kimmel and owner Robert Clay.

No one can catch Touch Tone

ALTOONA, Iowa - Touch Tone set the pace and then drew off through the stretch under Robby Albarado to score an impressive 7 1/4-length victory over Buckle Down Ben in the 1 1/16-mile, $250,000 Iowa Derby Friday night at Prairie Meadows.

Albarado and Touch Tone made the lead from the inside post soon after the start and ran a half-mile in 46.12 seconds without pressure.

Second-tier Lukas in Bashford

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As much success as D. Wayne Lukas typically enjoys early in the spring meet at Churchill Downs, he also has an enviable record in races at the end of the meet.

Lukas, with four wins in both the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, is the all-time leading trainer in the Bashford Manor Stakes, which highlights Sunday's closing-day program at Churchill. Lukas has sent out five 2-year-olds to capture the Grade 2 Bashford Manor, including the last three winners: Time Bandit (1998), Dance Master (1999) and Duality (2000).
