Sure Shot Biscuit gets a rematch in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - Hustler, Rock and Roll, and Sure Shot Biscuit - the top three finishers last year - will meet again Sunday in the $100,000 Omaha Handicap on the final day of the Horsemen's Park three-day meet.

Also on the card is the $25,000 Horsemen's Park Breeder's Derby and what is surely the most lucrative $3,500 claiming race in the country, a one-mile race with a purse of $25,000.

In last year's Omaha, Hustler led from start to finish, with Rock and Roll trying him every step of the stretch.

Restrictions hurt American, but not Million

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Sunday's American Derby field here could have swelled by as many as five European imports, but tightened United States quarantine restrictions enacted because of the outbreak of hoof and mouth disease in England kept the Europeans from coming. In their absence, the Grade 2 American Derby has a field of seven.

These quarantine restrictions won't affect the stakes on Arlington Million Day, however.

Laboccetta faring well in new career

ELMONT, N.Y. - His riding career cut short by injury, Frank Laboccetta Jr. has made the often difficult transition to trainer look somewhat easy.

The 30-year-old Laboccetta, who took out his trainer's license earlier this year, has won with six of his first 19 starters, including four of 10 at the Belmont spring/summer meet. Sunday, he will attempt to win his first stakes when he sends out Pulled Out in the $75,000 Evan Shipman Stakes, Belmont's closing-day feature.

Toddler should win Shipman, but . . .

ELMONT, N.Y. - While Toddler looms a solid favorite in Sunday's $75,000 Evan Shipman Stakes, trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. sent out mixed signals Friday when discussing his 4-year-old colt's chances in the 1 1/16-mile race for New York-bred colts and geldings.

Second time ought to be better

MIAMI - Double Road's first stakes appearance was a disastrous sixth-place finish in the Doradoradora Handicap last summer at Calder. But chances are she will fare much better when stepping up to the top level for the second time in her career in Sunday's $30,000 Mia's Hope Stakes.

Going long in the Oaks

Benoit & Associates
Chris McCarron on Starrer, the likely favorite in Saturday's Coaching Club American Oaks.

ELMONT, N.Y. - While some are scurrying from Saturday's Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks because of its demanding 1 1/2-mile distance, trainer David Hofmans is embracing it with his 3-year-old filly Starrer.

Considering Hofmans shipped Starrer 3,000 miles for this race, what's another 12 furlongs?

No competition left for 'Lake'

DEL MAR, Calif. - The retirement of Happyanunoit, announced Thursday, has left Tranquility Lake as a heavy favorite in Saturday's $400,000 Ramona Handicap at Del Mar. But even that will not guarantee victory for the 6-year-old Tranquility Lake in the meeting's premier turf race for fillies and mares.

Casse has two choices for stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Mark Casse's two most accomplished runners, Grade 1 winner Exciting Story and Grade 2 winner Prime Timber, head Saturday's $107,600 Bold Venture Handicap at Woodbine.

Six older runners were entered in the 6 1/2-furlong dash, but the field would be reduced to five if Casse decides to scratch one of his two big guns. Exciting Story has the outside post, while Prime Timber drew post 1.
